We are in the very early stages of toilet training (as in started yesterday!!) Ashleigh seems to have clicked that she is meant to wee on the toilet - except she hasn't yet. She had a small accident this morning but after that kept slightly wetting her knickers and stopping once she felt it, saying wees and running to the toilet but wouldn't finish on there. I put a nappy on her after lunch as she was going to bed and I checked her literally a minute later and she had done a huge wee in her nappy so she was obviously holding a lot in. So after that long story, is it ok for her to be holding on like this? I don't want her to get an infection or anything. I really feel that once she does that first wee on the toilet, it should all click into place but it must be scary or something for her

Taine used to do that all day - hold on that is. He would be running around holding himself and look soooo uncomfortable. He wouldn't go in a nappy, on the toilet or anywhere. At a loss, I would throw him into the bath and he would go, but be upset about it.
He did this for MONTHS. I was super concerned and talked to daycare and a doctor about it.

And nothing happened. He was eventually able to pee on the toilet, but even now he holds on most of the day. and will perhaps pee only twice.

So he is fine and healthy - like Ashleigh.

I find that Leah won't wee as well on the potty if she has her knickers on and tends to have accidents. If she is running around in the nude then she wee's on the potty all the time and has no accidents at all. We have only been doing this just over a week and this is what is working for us at the moment.

Will she go on a potty as opposed to a toilet?

I agree with the bare bum thing too - our DD seems to have more success with nothing on than with knickers, though she is starting to now wee only a little (with them on) and then run to the loo to finish.
