Topic: Routines Posted: 22 January 2009 at 11:04am |
I am trying to get some routines going in my house as at the moment there aren't any and you could tell if you were here.
What is your routine?? I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old

Jack is 21mths and our latest routine (waking has got earlier so everything is brought forward):
6.30am wake. Turn on Hi5 and give a cup of milk while DH and try and wake up
7.30ish b/fast
If I need to go out we generally do it in the morning
9-9.30am generally wants a snack
10.30am lunch (or large morning tea)
11am nap
12.30-1pm wakes up
snacks during the afternoon - times vary depending on the day
5.30pm we all eat dinner together
6pm bath with Daddy
6.30pm out of bath and dressed, cup of milk
7pm usually asleep by now
Jack needs us with him to go to sleep and is often still a bit excitable at bed time no matter what we do, so am trying to thing of something else to try at bedtime to help him relax
ETA: not sure how this will go when #2 arrives

Alani is 14 months, so quite a bit younder than your boy. Also she has two daysleeps which are now slowly merging into one.
Anyway this is our routine:
6.30 -7ish wake up and breakfast with dad
9.00 wash, teeth, getting dressed
9.30 -10ish down for morning sleep
11.30-12ish up and lunch
Then we do stuff and go out cause this seems the time of the day when she's awake for the longest time.
3ish afternoon tea
3.30-4ish down for afternoon sleep (this doesn't happen every day and sleeptimes vary from 30min up to 2 hrs)
6ish dinner
7ish getting ready for bed, pjs, wash, teeth, reading a book.
In bed and asleep between 7.30 and 8. At the moment depending on weather cause her room gets really hot.

Ours are just a little younger than yours but this works for us. The times are really directed by what Dom tells me he needs through hunger/tired signs etc.
6.15-7.00am Dominic wakes up & has nappy change and breakfast with Daddy
8.00am Bottle
8.30am Plays in cot with toys and books while I shower.
If we have things to do in the morning we do them here, I pack morning tea and lunch and Dom has them on the run, Isobelle BFing so we work around that too.
9.30-10am Morning Tea
11.00am Lunch
11.30 Brush teeth, stories and nap time
1.00-1.30pm Wakes up
If we have something to do in afternoon we do it here. Same as morning just pack food for him.
1.30-2.00pm Afternoon tea
4.30-5pm Dinner time
5-5.30pm Bottle
5.45-6pm Bathtime and brush teeth
6-6.30pm Stories and bedtime
Dominic is usually asleep by 7pm - 7.30pm but if it is particulary hot sometime it is 8 or later before he drops off. Looking forward so some cooler nights.
You will notice that our routine is from this time to that time, it just depends on what Dominic is like that day. Many time he even has dinner at 4pm (really early) but he is so hungry and tired that he just can't wait any longer. I believe in watching them and seeing what they need when (naps etc) and then building your routine around that. Dom loves his routine, knowing what is happening when and I have found that if I am late getting his bottle he starts getting the teats and stuff out, very cute.

Cooper's is pretty much exactly the same, he NEEDS to have his morning sleep, otherwise we have a crappy day.

Our babies are similar ages. Here is what one of our days looks like
6.30ish: Noah and Iliana wake up. Noah has breakfast straight away and Iliana is happy to wait for her feed. After breakfast its play time for Noah and Iliana will have her first sleep at about 8.00
9.30ish: Noah has a snack and then plays some more
11.30ish Noah has lunch and then has a nap for about 2 hours
2.00ish Noah wakes up and we will either go out or stay home for play
5.30ish we have dinner together. At about 6.00 we start getting both babies ready for a bath. If DH is home he takes care of Noah and gets him to bed and I look after Iliana. Both babies are in bed for the night by 7.00. I have had to do the evening routine on my own a few times and it still works well. Iliana waits wrapped in her towel while I get Noah ready and I read to them both while I give Iliana a last BF for the night.
Iliana isn't on a routine at all except that she goes to bed at around the same time every night. During the day we just go along with what she is doing. She will generally only be awake for an hour at a time in the morning and then a bit more awake in the afternoons. She's really easy going.

I cant cope without my routines though I do find that I can be slightly flexible with them so that we can get out and about. Here's mine:
7am get up & breakfasts (twins bottles & toddler cereal)
9-10am twins sleep
10:30am toddler morning tea snacks
11am twins bottles, solid food (just started)
11:30am toddler's lunch
12 noon all in bed. Mum has free time!
2pm twins up
2:30pm toddler usually wakes up (but left to sleep if needed)
3pm twins bottles, toddler afternoon tea
5:30pm toddler dinner
6pm twins bottles
6:30pm baths (not every night)
6:50pm toddler bottle & bedtime story
7pm all in bed & mum cooks evening meal and does her own thing!
10:30pm twins bottles
This routine gives me plenty of child-free time to do the business paperwork, baking and also my crafts. I also find it easier to get out of the house knowing what comes next and so I can figure out what I need to take etc.

Our routine goes something like this;
DD is nearly 3 so it's probably alot simpler.
7-730am - wakes up, toilet and breakfast
8ish - get DD dressed and clean teeth etc
9am - play with toys puzzles, i'll get her lunch ready
9:30 -toilet and get ready to go to activities.
9:45 - leave for music, gym or playgroup unitl lunch time ish.
12- home for lunch or at friends place to play.
2pm - sometimes will have a nap but usually not.
3-4pm plays at home or we go out and about to do shopping or other chores.
5pm - dinner with family
6pm - bath time
6:30 - gets ready for bed and has cup of milk or milo
7pm - brush teeth and then into bed DH reads a few books
7:30 - lights out
