I thought Ella was full on, I had no idea!
Benjy is determined to turn me grey before I hit 30.
This morning I was pottering around as the children played happily in Ella's room... Or so I thought!
I got a waft of a minty fresh smell and heard water running in the bathroom. Down I went to investigate and found Benjy perched on the sink with a nearly empty tube of toothpaste in his hands. The evidence was all over his mouth, hands and the basin.
I cleaned him up and told him off, and as I did so the freshness of his breath set off a little alarm in my head about the fluoride in adult toothpastes being toxic to little children.
I rang healthline who immediately set my hair on end and transferred me to poison control.
Because I couldn't tell how much he'd ingested they were deliberating for a loooong time about whether or not we should go directly to hospital, thankfully he chose then to start singing happy birthday at the top of his lungs which reassured them he was ok for the time being. (After we'd run around preparing to race off)
We were given a long list of symptoms to watch for and strict instructions to go straight to hospital if he showed any of them. I also had to pour as much milk into him as I could, to help bind the fluoride.
Thankfully he is still fine and playing happily, none the wiser about all the dramas.
Bathroom door is now firmly shut and toothpaste is shut away out of sight of Benjy the toothpaste fiend.

OMG Mel! Good on you for being so onto it! I have to confess that I didn't know that about toothpaste, so I've learnt something new today!

As much as we try as hard as we can to keep our kids safe sometimes they can out smart us.

Thanks guys!
I can laugh about it now, but it was pretty freaky at the time when they were talking about him being seriously ill from poisoning!
I just can't keep up with him at the moment, he can climb up on everything and is very adept at opening things that are supposed to be childproof!
I have to watch him all the time, he's way too clever for his own good.

LOL that would have been scary

we just did a study on fluride toothpastes in small children who like to eat it . . .
and for there to be any effect apart from them getting an upset tummy they would have to eat the entire contents of at least 2 tubes of a really strong pharmacy only perscription toothpaste.
or 4 adult size tubes of normal colgate/macleans

fluride can agrivate excema tho.

That's very interesting CatzKids, because the man on the phone at poison control looked it up and (I remember this very clearly) told me he would need to be hospitalised if he'd had 33g or more. It was a 110g tube of Colgate Total he'd attacked. I was looking at it in panic thinking there's waaay more than that gone!
I wonder how we got such different information?
I did think afterwards it was pretty weird that there wasn't warnings or anything on adult toothpastes if such a small amount was so dangerous, as most people keep toothpaste out in the open in their bathrooms.
Ah well, I'm going to err on the side of caution from now on anyway!

It could be 33g of flouride? Really would depend on the concentration of fluoride in the tube. Well Kahtrell eats toothpaste from time to time along with body butter, moisturiser and the like lmfao. I know that they're fairly safe so not too worried when I catch him! Ah Kids!.

Nope he was definitely talking about the toothpaste.
He also asked what Benjy weighs, when he was asking about the brand and the tube size. He is a bit of a lightweight, only 11ish kg at 2.5yrs so maybe he was working along those lines.
