Topic: How much sleep?? Posted: 15 September 2008 at 4:50pm |
I asked one of the teachers at Isla's daycare for help with Isla's early waking,...and she said Im expecting too much wanting her to sleep from 7-7.30pm til 6am.
I thought I was expecting les than the 'average' child her age.
She normally gets a total or 12 hrs sleep per day,...1- 11/2 hr day sleep and 10 1/2- 11 hrs at night.
So how much sleep was/is your child getting when aged almost 2??

hi kellz, Vincent goes to bed about 9pm these days, & wakes at 8.30ish he usually averages between 11 & 12 hours a night. He also sleep up to three hours during the day. He just started cutting back to only 2 hours over the past few days, but this changes all the time. In saying that, the night sleeps usually he stirs during hte night once & i give him his dummy or he may wake at say 6.30/7am & i'll give him his dummy & he goes back off for another hour & a half or so. This works for us espesh with me being preggy at the mo

Hmm thats what I thought,....way more sleep than Isla. She wopes really well when sleeping a total of 12 hrs a day,..she just doesnt need as much sleep, but I thought that saying I was expecting too much was odd.
Will be good to hear how much others are sleeping.

Oliver usually sleeps from 7pm until about 6.30/7.00 am. Most days he sleeps for anything from an hour to two hours after lunch. I am noticing that some days his day sleep is shorter now though.

Our boy sleeps from 8.30/9.30 ish through to 6.30 so usually 9 hours at night, then he sleeps 1 hour during the week at DC but does sleep 2 hours at home in the weekend. All up 10 - 11 hours a day,
He has never slept more than 12 hours.....always thought he was on the other end of the scale to most kids!

That IS odd Kellz! Maya has always had low sleep needs, even as a newborn, and by 2 she had long since dropped her day sleep but she still slept from 7pm till 7-7.30am so I'd say you're pretty reasonable in your expectations.
Gremlins have much higher sleep needs, they are having a 1 1/2 - 3 hour day sleep plus going down from 6.30pm till 7am but they don't sleep well, they'd probably need less sleep if they actually slept when they were in bed.

I don't think that advice was really right. Kids have different sleep needs but I don't think you are expecting too much.
Elle has a 2 hour sleep each night and does anything from 6 to 11 hours at night. At 14 months she was sleeping 14 hours a night! As you know she is awake playing each night which is why she sometimes has as little as 6 hours.

Erin goes to bed between 7:30/8pm and wakes anywhere from 6-7am, and most days still has a 1.5-2hr nap.

i think every kid is different in how much sleep they need, maybe due to how active they are??
When Bay was 2 he would go down at about 9pm and sleep till 8-9am and then have 2 lots of 3 hours during the day!
Astin is a fare bit off 2 years old but he goes down at 8pm and wakes at 7-8am and has anywhere from 2-5 hours during the day from 10am onwards BUT if he goes to daycare where hes alot more active he has the normal sleep but is barely keeping his eyes open when i pick him up at 5pm and generally dozes off while eating his tea!

wow, i must say it's nice to see i'm not the only mummy that puts their kids down later than 7pm. Because vincent sometimes doesn't wake until 5.30pm from a big sleep, he then goes down late. But i'm finding if we put him down much earlier than 8.30pm he mucks around & grizzles or talks for ages. doesn't seem to calm & go to sleep till the nearer 9pm.
Kellz, i do think thats weird that they should tell you that as each child is different. & it is only "recommended" how much sleep they should get. My god-nephew dropped his day sleep at bout 18mths but would sleep 12hrs at night, yet Vincent probably has a total of 13-16hours in a 24hr period.... no one is text book aye

as with everything...all kids have different needs and sleep is no exception. but i don't think you are asking too much of isla kellz!!
charli and jack both go to bed at 7-7.30pm and are up 7-7.30am. charli has a nap most days for about 2hrs
jack was the same at 2yrs but he slept 3-4hrs still and 12hrs at night........ahhhhh the good times

McKayla at two was sleeping for 15 min to an 1 hour during the day. Went to bed at 10 at night (since birth like this and no matter what we did wouldnt go down earlier) and wide awake from 5 in the morning.
Now she is finally starting to cut the day time sleep out. If she goes to bed at 7 she is awake between 3 and 4. At 8 she will sleep to 5 and if I am really lucky sometimes 6.
This child just doesnt seem to need sleep as much as other kids.

Michaela has 1 day time nap of between 1 - 2 hours (sometimes a bit longer and other time she spends two hours mucking around in her room occasionally knocking on her door). She goes to bed at 7:30pm and wakes up at 5:30am.
She never seemed to need as much sleep as I do
