OK, so my two year ol dhas had a cough for the past 12weeks. it's normal to have it for 6-8 weeks apparantly. Tonight coming home from in town (half an hour away) he started saying owie ear. then started crying hard out. this is not like him, he normally would sit quietly & fall asleep if tired. We got home & he just wanted big hugs. put him into bed & he cried heaps then started asking for the dr. i had asked him if he wanted me to take him to dr earlier. He just kept screaming. it didn't sound like his normal, i want mummy cry. i kinda feel like i'n my gut i should take him to A & E? but then i keep second guessing myself. he finally just fallen asleep, but it took me sitting with him stroking his hair for him to settle.

I guess my question is, am i just being paranoid & silly & reading too much into it as in it's just him being perhaps a bit over tired..... or is my gut telling me i should take him to dr just in case?

Not paranoid :)

When Elle says she has a sore ear and asks for the doctor, she is always right (so far anyway). I would just take him in the morning as for now sleep is probably more important.

Hugs! It's horrible having an upset kid - we have one here this week too.

To put your mind at ease I'd probably head to A & E just to be sure ...I mean I don't think they charge anything (Well they didn't when Lucas was younger...) and if its out of character for him to cry like that inconsolably then maybe he has got an ear infection or the likes ...

You could probably wait till tomorrow morning to get him into the docs and cross your fingers he sleeps through and perks up in the meantime?

Hey Chonny, how's your little man today?  Did you head to the after hours in the end or are you going to make an appointment for today?

Definitely take him to the Dr this morning if you didn't get to A&E. Ashlee had a cough, we took her to the Dr initially and he said it's just a common cold. She would have been coughing near on 12 weeks too when I took her back and told him she'd been coughing since we were there last (mummy instinct KNEW it wasn't just a cold) and he said Asthma, but sent us for a chest xray just in case she had an infection (which he confidently said he didn't think she had). Turned out she did have a raging chest infection that had probably been sitting there for weeks!

So, trust your instincts before it gets any worse. you know your son better than anybody.

Ella has always had infections when she's complained of sore ears too.
I hope Vincent is better quickly Chonny!

hi ladies, thanks for the advice. After being asleep for max 5 mins Vincent coughed big time (normally sleeps thru it) and then screamed. so off we trot to A & E to find it had just closed. my mum was out so went to her place to wait for her to get home & see what she thought as next closest place was middlemore. He finally settled & fell asleep in my arms about 10.30 so i put him on the double spare bed at my parents place where he n i stayed the night. he kept waking crying & even with his dummy not settling easily. Took him to dr yesterday & ears were dull, not red, but dull so starting of an infection possibly. Has given prescription for antibugs to try for a week. if couch no better then try an inhaler for a couple of weeks. I'm so pleased they have given something coz i kinda would have felt stupid if they said no go away type thing. so heres hoping things clear up soon. He still not 100% but will go get antibugs now to try

Hugs to Vincent and you too Chonny! Gremlins seem to have been sick for bloody ever too!

My thoughts on to take or not to take to the doctor are to always trust your gut. You'll never regret going, at worst it'll be a wasted few hoursand you'll feel like a paranoid dork, but you might just regret NOT going...

yea, thanks emma. The AB's seemed to have made him much happier so the ears must have been brewing. still coughing a bit altho not so much today. he still has a few days left of AB's to see about the cough. HOpefully they do the trick, otherwise poor kid has to have an inhaler for a couple of weeks to trial that out.
