One more question ...

This is a typical breakfast -
While I'm feeding him his cereal and fruit, he has a spoon that he will throw (or play in the food on a good day!) ... he won't eat if I don't give him a spoon to play with, and he will stop eating if I don't give it back after its been thrown. When we finish the cereal (both spoons thrown in the bowl means hes finished!) I'll give him some fruit while I'm making him toast .... he will eat most of it (or just a bite on a bad day) then throw it, if I pick it up he usually has another bite then it may get thrown again .... then he has toast - eats about half to 3/4 of it, but pulls bits apart, throws bits around the highchair tray or on to the floor .... and generally they are all thrown or pushed to the side when he is finished (but its hard to tell, cos if I pick them up he will have another bite!).

He can eat with the spoon himself if I put food on it, but has decided he won't the last couple of weeks.
Some meals are worse than others. And it doesn't seem to be when hes not hungry cos he'll happily keep eating after throwing!

I've tried telling him no, ignoring it, picking the thrown item up with no fuss and carrying on, taking the thrown item away (he doesn't care) ... even giving him less food in the hope that next meal he will be hungrier and throw less .... but nothing seems to work. I don't want to have "food issues" or be making a big deal about it, as he is generally a great eater .... and making a big deal about it causes a tantrum in the highchair (not ideal!)

So my question - any suggestions on what I can do to stop the throwing? Or is he a bit too young and I should just deal with it for another month or two and hope it stops naturally / worry about it then if it doesn't??

Thanks!!!

Honestly? Don't worry about it for now and yes I think he's still a little young to understand the concept that throwing your food around isn't very PC. Leave it for now and try again in a few months.

Ugh, the gremlins *still* throw food. I usually just take their food away once they start throwing it but to be honest they don't seem to learn coz at the next mealtime they do the same thing. Mercedes even likes to shred her food into small pieces to throw.

I just couldn't deal with picking up another meal from the floor so I brought Mia a little mini table and chair set to eat at like a big kid.
I sit at the table with her and chat white she eats. She sometimes gets off the seat and has a run about but I just keep sitting there and if she is hungry she hops back up. She hasn't thrown her food once since.

I found that if Mia was forced to sit she would just chuck everything over board or smear it everywhere. Maybe now she feels a bit more in control she doesn't need to chuck food to get attention!

Spencer chucks his food sometimes and then when I get him out of the highchair he eats it off the floor Sorry probably not helpful at all.
At breakfast if he messes about I sometimes put the kids programmes on the tv and turn his highchair so he can watch that and then he just lets me shovel it in, so you could perhaps try that.

No real useful suggestions for stopping throwing here... but maybe you could try and attach some string to the end of the spoon and the other end to the highchair, so it is at least more easily retrievable for you.

My boy throws everything but it doesnt bother me cause its all part of him learning...starts to annoy me when im tired but they all do it at some stage.....he also puts his hands threw the food to check out the texture then puts it all over his face...we just make sure that the gross meals are at dinner time so he has a bath straight after ...then we let the cat in to finish the rest :) or the dog and nans :) he also wont eat well if we are watching him.

Love the string idea!!

We have "breakfast" on TV most mornings ... maybe I should try kids TV ... hes never been interested in TV tho ...

Yes - I guess it is just a stage we have to tolerate .... I'm sure theres worse to come ....
