Topic: snacking or set times Posted: 28 July 2008 at 11:28am |
Lycan is not a great eater at the best of times...especially around dinner, pretty much wont eat it. I generally let him eat when hes hungry which means he is snacking through out the day..... So i was wondering should i continue doing this or make him eat at set times?
What do you do with your toddlers?

Daniel isn't as old as Lycan but he has set times. Breakfast at 8, snack at 10, lunch at 12-12:30, snack at 3, dinner at 5:30. It's great for us because he knows exactly when he can expect food

We don't have strict times for snacks but we do have breakfast, lunch and dinner as 'proper' meals, so we don't allow snacking close to those mealtimes.
My kids are both a bit picky but I figure if they're hungry, they'll eat when the food is there.

Oh yeah, This is pretty much his day....he has breakfast around 8:30 which is a piece of toast and a bowl of cereal...then a snack around 10ish...he has just finished lunch which was a banana sandwich, chips, cheese a prune and a glass of water...he'll have a titty now and go down for his afternoon nap, have another snack when he wakes up and then thats it...we usually have dinner around 6ish and he wont eat then....i leave his dinner on the table and he will pick at it around 8pm when its nice and cold.
And thats a good day, other days he wont eat a solid meal at all and just snack all day.....my MIL just says to let him eat when he wants and what he wants even if it means giving him weetbix for dinner
He now knows how to open the fridge so he helps himself when he's hungry......urgh.........

Our "method" is pretty much the same as caraMel's, we have meals are regular times - breakfast / lunch / dinner, and snacks in between can be flexible, although not too close to meals. We've been having issue with dinners lately too though, last night she barely touched it and is usually a good eater.

Jack has breakfast around 8am, lunch at about 11am with a nap straight after, snack around 2/2.30pm depending on when he wakes (only has a snack as there is quite a gap between lunch and dinner), dinner at 4.30pm then has some of our veges when we eat at 6pm.
I am not sure how old Lycan is but IMO you will probably need to get him into the habit of eating dinner with you at some stage but the timing would be up to you. If letting him snack all day works for the 2 of you then personally I wouldn't change it, why fix something that isn't broken!

I make Leah a lunch box up for during the morning and she eats from that when she wants, (she is a grazer!) I put enough in that it means she doesn't have a seperate lunch. If we are at playcentre or home she sits down at a little table to eat whenever she wants something so she is not just wandering aroung eating. If we are out then she has it in the car or pushchair. After she has a sleep, if its before 3pm I give her a small snack and then she has nothing until dinnertime which is about 4.45-5pm. Normally this means she will eat a reasonable amount at dinner as she is hungry. This is what works for us, and it has taken a long time for her to eat a decent amount during the day so I am happy to do it this way. Also means we don't really have a lot of food being wasted as she is eating when she wants and is hungry.

Our meal routine is basically the same as caraMel's too, trying not to snack too close to meal times cause it noticeably ruins her appetite.
Breakfast around 8am
Snack around 9:30am
Lunch around 11:30am
Snack around 2:30pm
Dinner between 4:30pm-5pm
Alyssa will point out when dinner is taking too long by insisting on sitting at the table even when no food is there, and chanting "where's my dinner?" or saying "dinnertime" over and over... thanks to DH!

Ella has an early breakfast compared to some of the other toddlers- she has breakfast as soon as she gets up (so normally around 7), plus a 2nd b/fast with me at around 8.30, snack at 10/10.30 lunch at 12, snack at 3 and then dinner at 4.45ish. Lately she has been getting harder and harder to feed lunch to, as she prefers to eat a little bit and then have a play and then a bit more so sometimes lunch can go on for an hr.

DD has Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and then dinner...if she is good dessert (we are not bog dessert eaters). I try not to give her any thing in between as she refuses to eat her main meals then. However she will come to me with a banana or apple and wanna eat it....I let her as it is fruit!!

We don't have set snack times at all but we keep to a pretty consistent diet so I know what and how much she is eating. I figure that Olivia is a pretty good gauge for how hungry she is and she is usually hungry at the right times. I bought forward her dinner by half an hour today and gave her a suppertime snack to stop her from snacking in the afternoons and it worked out even better than I thought. Every kid is different though, some need routines for food, others don't.

We have pretty set times - it varies a bit as he is still having two naps some days and one nap some days ... but basically he has breakfast about 7.30ish, morning tea at 9.45am, lunch at 11.30 (if having 1 nap after lunch) or 12.30 (if having 2 naps), bottle about 1.30/2pm and afternoon tea about 3pm (depending on 2nd nap if hes having 2), dinner at 5pm, bottle at 6.45pm. I try not to give him any afternoon tea after 3.45/4pm (if he has a long afternoon nap and sleeps through afternoon tea time) as he won't be so hungry at dinner time. If he wakes at 4.30pm and seems hungry we just do dinner a bit early. And if he has afternoon tea late I might do dinner a bit later too.

We stick to the routine they have at daycare - makes sense as Gina's there 5 days a week
She has bottle when she wakes up at around 7am; breakfast at 9am; lunch at 11-11:30am; snack at 3pm; dinner at 5-5:30pm; milk before bed.
We also offer her things to snack on if needed in between - tends to be around 4:30pm and she'll have fruit or raisins or crackers; then around 7pm if she's still wide awake and not ready for bottle & bed
