Topic: Toddler Tantrum Idol auditions in here Posted: 25 April 2008 at 11:47pm |
Last evening I took Emma Rose to the mall for dinner at the food court. She ate her meal in a reasonably well-behaved manner, but after about 45 minutes I could see she was getting a bit grumpy and tired, so I cleaned her up and headed for the parking lot, a good ten-minute hike away (as Em was walking, not in her stroller, and has to stop and yell "Ooooh!" at every interesting store display she sees, and touch all of the things at her level, and gape at passing strangers, and pick up leaves and bits of rubbish from the floor, and comment on all the other babies/daddies/lollies we happen to walk by).
Anyway, we were just about to exit the mall for the parking lot when she decided she didn't want to hold my hand any more, and when I tried to insist, she threw herself down on her knees and started screaming, "NO!!!!" I picked her up by the underarms, but she went boneless and wouldn't stand up. So I used the ol' colic carry (not so easy with a two-year-old) to get her in position to carry her without dropping her, and started to cross the foyer of the mall to get out the doors. Meanwhile, Em was kicking me and wailing, "DOWN!"
The worst part? All of this took place in front of the Botany Crime Watch information table, where three official-looking men regarded me and my child with suspicion during the whole incident.
We got outside, where her screams intensified, and headed around the side of the building to where I was parked. By this point she was sobbing and writhing in my arms, and all I could think was, "Get to the car, get to the car!" Then, up ahead, I saw the flashing lights of a police car parked in the loading zone near the bus stop, where at least 10 people were waiting for the bus. Not sure why the cop was parked there, but he was standing on the sidewalk next to the police car, just looking around. I shamefacedly passed him, praying he wouldn't think I was abusing my kid, who was still wailing and flailing. I could feel his eyes boring into my back as I slunk toward the car...
I did eventually get her to the car, wrestle her into the carseat, get her home, and put her to bed VERY early -- but man, that was the most humiliating tantrum ever.
So share your shamefaced toddler tantrum moments with me and make me feel better, please!

well done Katherine on making it through what was obviously a hideously embarassing situation, without loosing your Mummy cool
I can imagine it would have been very easy to have dropped her off to the Policeman "I just found this kid in the mall screaming" then legged it
Now I'm going to toally log out of Oh baby so Miss Caitlin will never find this post, it might give her ideas LOL. We've been lucky so far

Well I can tell you that this happens to her quite alot and therefore we do not take our cute as hell daughter any where now!!
Today we went to briscoes in Manukau and she was ok, looking at every thing...climmed in to the display bed and had a rest....every thing was sorta ok untill I walked of to look at some thing leaving her with her dad, when I returned they were not there or near by....so obviously I started to look for them....then I heard a scream that sounded all so familiar!!
No Papa no.....Aaaaaaaa!!!! EEEEEEE!!!
So I followed the scream, my hubby was sorta walking with her half hanging. and then when he saw me he just put her down and said I am going to go and pay for these!! gee thanks! she was on the floor on her knees and still crying!!
I said to her " are you being naughty Zaara??" "NOOOOO"
came the answer....."well you are naughty and being not so nice, do you wanna say sorry to papa and Mama?"..."NOOOOOO". came the answer..."ok well then you can stay here and I am going home"...." Ok mama I am sorry"..."UP Mama". So finally she calm down and said sorry to her dad but refused to hold our hand when walking to our car and then she wanted to drive the car and screamed!!
Any who we got home and she like an angel!!
What is wrong with these kids?? LOL
So you are not alone there hun!!

Sounds familiar!
Dropped DH off to work one morning, and had to go to the supermarket on the way back to pick up some prune juice for DD. Since she was being so good, at it was so nice to be out and about (and not in the house!) I thought we'd pop in to Spotlight to see if they had a particular color wool I needed.
BAD IDEA.
The first ten minutes were fine, virtually nobody in the store since it had just opened, so she was happy running around the aisles like a lunatic and pointing at all the pretty things. Except then she got to the loose reels of cotton, and started demolishing the lot one reel at at time - had to try and stop her and explain that "these are not toys to play with, can we put them back please", which seemed to work until she got to a rack of packaged tape measures and started biffing them all on the ground.
I got most of them back on the shelf all the while burning with shame as DD collapsed on the floor clutching another tape measure screaming "NO mama!! Nooo!!" As you can guess there were a few more people around by now giving me those awful sideways glances that say "Why can't you control your child ???"
I go to take it off her and - riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip !! *sigh* Packaging gone and tape measure straight into her mouth - and I wasn't planning to buy anything at all since they didn't have the wool I wanted. Fortunately it was only $2.50!
Lesson learned - never go into Spotlight without a stroller, even after I made it through the checkout with a munted tape measure I ended up having to biff DD over my shoulder in a 'firemans carry' just to get her out of the shop

try a five min walk with a pushchair, a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old screaming and crying at you and trying to head butt you and bite your hand because you are holding his hand cause he wouldnt get off the playground...
or the 2 yr old who refuses to get OUT of the car and screams NO when you ask if he wants out but then screams hysterically when you walk away...
or the several times i had to literally drag gabriel thru the manukau mall screaming and kicking but refusing to walk with me.

Oh the joys I have to look forward too, again
Natasha was my best tantrum thrower, (Although Alex gave it a good go too!!)
Natasha had a brilliant gag reflex so would chuck up everytime she got upset. Picture a screaming child spewing all over you, her and the shop floor .
I've hightailed it out of many shops with a very red face and a nasty smell following me.
No wonder it took me so long to have number three...oh the things we forget.

The gremlins are still novice tantrum throwers, altho they have their own distinct styles - Sienna is a foot stamper (apparently like her mother ) and Mercedes throws herself on the floor and wails.
Maya, on the other hand, is a practised expert. She could give lessons! I have a video of her at about 2-ish absolutely losing the plot on the floor, even she thinks she's an idiot when she watches herself now lol!
And I'm sorry to say, once a tantrum thrower, always a tantrum thrower. I'm ashamed to admit, my kids learnt from the best...

We have good ones here. Generally when in malls as that is when I want Elle to walk where I want her to walk i.e. to the car when we need to go home.
She squeals, says "Owwwwwwwwwwwwwww" (drama queen has learned that that gets a quick response) then starts squirming and hitting herself on the head whilst screaming "no no no". It is not a pretty sight and we do get some very concerned looks!!
I tend to take Elle to the mall on wet days so she can run around but I think it is leading her to believe that it is ok to run riot in malls at all times. Whoops.

Yip we have a great tantrum thrower here too. Hmm what embarassing situation to pick??
Ok one time we were going to plunket for Capreces check up and figured it was so close I wouldn't need a pram. So in we go and the check up went fine, Jack decided he to play with the toys on the way out so I let him have a play. About 10 mums with little babies arrive for a solids talk, they all sit down and the lady was getting ready to start so I decided it was time to go. Jack did not want to go.
I tried to grab his hand and get him to walk (while holding Caprece). Nope he still wasn't going and was so cross I interupted his game he lay on the ground and started screaming. After a few more attempts to pull him to his feet I had to pick him up all limp and screaming while trying to hold Caprece. I managed to wrestle them both out the door with 10 mums looking at us with those geez control your kid looks.
There have been many more with me either trying to wrestle 2 kids of running with them in the pram fast enough so Jack won't jump out
One of the playcentre mums recognised us by Jacks tantrum
So Katherine you are definately not alone

OH yeah Rach, the logistics of TWO of them at once is insane! Sienna once sat down in the middle of the carpark at the mall and there were cars coming, it was a mission trying to deal with her and stop Mercedes doing the same thing all at the same time

my only response to anyone who gives you "that look" whilst your child is in full on taty mode would be
"I hope you precious little bundle does the same to you one day!!"

I"m SO relieved to hear these stories!!!
We went through a stage of Isaac not being able to leave anywhere without throwing himself on the ground and screaming......
The last few times we've left peoples houses he's been coming quite happily though!!!!
Don't have any stories like yours though!! (YET!)
