Topic: Toothbrushing??? (plus random funny vid) Posted: 24 March 2008 at 9:15pm |
Does your toddler let you brush their teeth? If so - what's your secret!??!?!
I sit Caitlin on my knee and hold her arms down and she kinda lets me, but sticks her tongue on top of her teeth so it's really hard to get to them! Then I put more paste on the brush and let her "brush" (aka suck paste off the brush)
and here's the random funny I found when I wasn't even looking Enjoy!

Sounds about the same as us. DD lets me do a little bit of brushing but turns her head away/clamps lips shut/wriggles away after a few seconds. I just put up with the struggle and get stuck in as I really want her teeth to be good. Then I give her the brush and she sucks all the rest off. Sometimes I try to use a flannel, but she has so many teeth now it is hazardous to my fingers!

pmsl that is hilarious!! I love hearing babies laugh like that! So does anyone have any secrets on teaching them to spit?? Ash just swallows it (eeekkkk that sounds very disturbing lol!)
She is actually really good at letting us brush her teeth. I take one of her chairs into the bathroom and she stands on that. I stand behind her and hold her under her chin to tilt her head back and she just opens up and lets me brush away. Then at night we do it while she has a bath and she just opens her mouth then too. Very lucky in that respect.
I hope someone else has some tips that may help you

I might try the chair thing so she can see in the mirror. Very independant is my Lil' Missy So maybe seeing how to do it herself will help.
I vaguely remember Plunket saying that it doesn't matter if they don't spit, or that they can't!?!?! Dunno now - sorry

I had trouble before when we just had a normal tooth brush so i changed the head on my battery opperated one and gave it to him...and he loved it...so he now has one of his own. He allows me to do it first but then he has to do it himself afterwards.

Plunket told us to only use a teeny bit of toothpaste until they can spit.

We have the same problem too Toni. Only occassionally can I give them a decent clean!! I might try to use an electric toothbrush too cause Aron and I use one and maybe she doesn't see why she should have a normal one when we don't??
I was worried about the lack of regular brushing so I spoke to a dental nurse at the toddler day out, and she said at this stage brushing their teeth is more to form the habit than anything so no big deal. It is their diet that effects their teeth the most right now so she said not to worry too much but keep trying anyway.

Lucas won't let me anywhere near his mouth, let alone inside. I have found out tonight though that an easy option is to get the wet flannel with a tiny dab of toothpaste ready after a bath, and when he's lying on the bed wrapped up in his towel ...to tickle him & wipe his teeth that way.
If I give him a toothbrush to play with he just chucks it on the ground ...I sometimes offer it in the bath but he thinks its a drumstick, and hits it on the side of the bath (which by the way, is VERY ANNOYING).
I envy those who have kiddies 1year (or younger) that willingly open their mouths and let their parents brush their teeth.
Does anyone else find it extremely hard to get the inner side of bubs teeth clean? ...I'm scared of pushing Lucas' teeth forward in doing so.
