This year we decided to make our own xmas cards as something fun to do together.. It’s kinda time consuming but is fun and the girls have had fun decorating them. It started for us with a “surely we can make a pop-up card” and got a bit more complicated from there.

So thought I’d post instructions in case someone else is looking for some inspiration or something fun to do with their older kids.

How to make a pop-up christmas card

For this you will need :

*Some lightweight card:
(too thin will be flimsy, too thick won’t fold well) we got ours from warehouse stationary for $1.99 per A2 sheet, which gives you about 16 cards worth. You’ll need 3 sheets, one being green plus the front and back colour. You can buy more depending on how many cards you want to make.

* A good glue stick

* Some gel glue (again, warehouse stationary, $3.99, not runny like paste but dries faster than PVA – Ours is Leeho, glue gel, school pack, or something like that.. comes in colours but dries clear)

* A pack of star stickers (could also use little angel stickers but haven’t found any)

* Some sequins, beads and glitter, - our sequins I already had, beads were $1 per packet at Warehouse stationary, glitter $1.50.

the template of xmas tree shape - which i got from Here

Also some good scissors and a ruler.

Instructions:
Start off with a square of green card, 11cm by 11cm

Fold exactly in half and then flat again, trace around xmas tree shape with middle lines lining up, trace on top of the lines across the tree on one half – this will leave an indent in the cardboard that you can then draw in with pen.

Fold in half, cut along the across lines, score the downwards lines with the edge of the scissors, careful not to cut through. Fold the first piece up and then back the other way and bring back to middle, then repeat with all the next pieces.

Open up the card, turn over to the right side, fold backwards and back to flat again, press the pieces forward and fold so it pops out.

Take the inner coloured piece of card (15.5cm width, 11.5cm height), again fold exactly in half, trace the xmas card shape leaving more room up the top of the shape than the bottom. Cut this out.

Use the glue stick to glue the front part of the green card, then glue through the hole of the inner card.

Use another piece of card the same size (15.5cm by 11.5cm) to glue onto the back of this – this is the front of the card

This is about where I get the cards to before letting the girls decorate them, the star sticker goes on top, then the gel glue gets put along the green fold out bits and the girls ad their sequins or beads and then some glitter – they do need parental help – however those with older kids will probably just need to provide an area where they can make a nice big mess! Lol

Finished product:

We’ve had lots of fun this morning decorating ours.. (last night however I was going out of my mind with boredom cutting and gluing xmas trees into place!! ARGH!)

Have fun.
