Topic: Publicly funded IVF -what was your wait? Posted: 08 February 2010 at 11:08am |
Hi ladies
After 8 unsuccessful cycles of Clomiphene through FA we've just been referred through to F+ in Auckland by the MOH with public funding. We had a letter from the MOH in January to say that we qualified for public funding, and our details were transfered from FA to F+ on the 3rd of Feb. I've just phoned F+ to be told to call back next week, as the lady who usually answers these questions is currently away. So, due to (more than a wee bit of) impatience, I thought I'd ask here if anyone could shed any light? How long was your wait at F+ for publicly funded IVF?
TIA!

I got an appointment 6 months out, but then they weren't in PN full time. That is as far as we got though as nature smiled on us.
FX'd it's a short wait for you

Hi Ceres,
I think every branch is different but we had to wait 12 months for our first round of IVF, that was through FA Hamilton.
We have one last embie which we transfer in July this year and if that doesn't work we will be looking at another 12 months wait for the second round.
I think also they do give you the worse case scenario as I have heard of some who say the waiting list is 12 months but then get called in to start earlier.
Good luck.

Hi Ceres,
We are due to start our first round of ICSI in April 2010 with Fertility Plus in Auckland.
Basically we had our VERY FIRST appt at FA in Auckland in May 2009 and our orientation in January this year.
We were told to expect an 18 month wait but from first appt to first cycle it will be just under a year!!! SOOOO stoked!
Not sure why the wait was so short, possibly because we have 'unexplained fertility', not sure if that bumps you up the list at all?
The lady I speak to is Maree Henderson - So lovely & so patient (which is good with my million Q's!)
Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone for the info!
Parki that is so so good to hear! We had our first appointment with FA in July last year, so hopefully we have the same luck as you (though I'm not expecting so) and the wait isn't as long as they initially told us (FA said to expect about 16 months). Did you go through any other treatment before being put on the list for funding or was your application lodged in May? Reason I ask is our paperwork was only submitted in December. I have annovulation issues due to Clomiphene-resistant PCOS and DH has a low sperm count, so I'm not sure where that puts us in terms of the list. I'm hoping that the severity of our issues might help with list placement since we're fairly unlikely to have anything happen naturally.
Maree has been away from F+ this week but is back today so my plan is to give her a call this afternoon and ask about the wait and process including the orientation and so on. Are there any other questions that you would recommend asking?
How exciting that your first cycle is so soon!!!

So good to hear Parki that your wait wasn't as long as expected.
We have just put our application in, and have been told to anticipate an 18month wait. First appt with FA Auckland was about Nov09. IVF required due to MFI.
18mths is SO long!

Hi Ceres,
We had our first appt at FA in January and they said to expect 14-16 months wait.Well we got the letter 3 days ago and it's 20 months wait, October 2011, I had been getting my hopes up that we would get lucky and it would only be about a year so I was absolutely devestated. But can't do much about it, we figure by the time we save for a private treatment it will be Oct 2011 anyway!I'll be interested to hear what your waiting time is though, fingers crossed it's not as long as mine! I did wonder though if you just go at the end of the waiting list or if they bump people up depending on what the issue is. My DH has severely low sperm count, less than 2million per ml so apparently our chances of getting pregnant on our own are pretty minimal anyway, so it's gutting because we don't really have any hope that it will happen naturally for us in that 20 months. Sorry hope I havn't put a downer on things-just wanted to give you a heads up as I was not expecting so long a wait-hopefully it wont be for you though!

Jane w thats a long wait!! Are you trying menevit for your man- it can't increase numbers but can do good things for quality etc- we get ours from pharmacydirect.co.nz and have a look at stuff online.
Have hope- I know someone who was in the same boat and they had one baby through IVF and then got pregnant naturally after that. I know there are lots of stories but it can happen

Hi Hope1,
Yup he's been taking Menevit for 4 months now, he had been taking it for 3 months by the time we saw FS and there was no change in his count and only slight change in motility but still very low. I have looked around a lot for all sorts of solutions but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much out there, and I guess it's just one of those unexplained things. DH is healthy, non smoker, rarely drinks, has always worn boxers etc etc, he couldn't really make any changes to improve!, acupuncture is one that he might try but we will wait until next year so he can do it before IVF. Until then if something happens that would be great but I almost don't want to get my hopes up, it's been a hard few months and I've finally got to a point where I want my life back now so while we are waiting we are just going to enjoy each other and try and stop obsessing over babies-.....easier said than done!
