Just wondering whether when you had your hubbys SA done whether it was really indepth or just told you the basics?
We get regular tests done through our GP, but it only ever tells us motility, count, aggulation, liquification time and volume. It doesn't tell us percentage of forward moving or morphology or PH levels.

Did you get your test done through GP or fertility specialist?
What lab did it?
Did it cost you?

We are in Tauranga and our GP said our labs don't do these tests, but I can't help but wonder if she just doesn't have this knowledge as she doesn't specialise in fertility tests.

Any info on this would be great.

Hi there... my understanding is that in Tauranga they dont do specific tests as my husbands tests came back ok (so we thought...) until we got referred to fert assoc in hamilton and within the hour we were told he had antisperm antibodies - why didnt we have this confirmed in tga????? We had no idea at all - my husband had a vasectomy reversal and we were told all ok... but in actual fact was not! The only way now is IVF for us because of this...
I would definitely recommend a thorough test if possible.. still cant work out why this was not tested for us before?? hmmmmm.

My DH had a SA done almost a year ago and it did tell us mobility, motility and morphology along with all the other stuff. It was ordered through our GP but he had to do it at the main Medlab office in Kilmore St here in CHCH so that may be why. Because you have to have the sample in within an hour maybe they don't have all the necessary testing equipment in Tauranga? It was free. DH's morphology level came back at 22% and they like it to be 25% so they (don't know if it was the lab or our GP) sent his results to a fertility specialist who said it was ok because they had just moved the bar.

The SA you get done through the standard labs (as in Diagnostic Medlab) will only give you basic information (count, motility, morphology etc) and even then their results tend to be more optomistic than the fertility specialists (simply because, as it was explained to us, they don't necessarily write off things that should be written off), they don't test for antibodies etc. Fertility Associates (or presumably Fertility Plus) run the SA through their own labs and look at things much, much more indepth. The cost through FA when we had this done was around $90, and the result was quite different to the DIagnostic Medlab result. The difference is that FA are dealing with semen/sperm and issues all the time and they know exactly what they are looking for.

ETA - Purple Dragon, getting the tests done through your GP is likely, unfortunately, a bit of a waste of time. If I was you, I'd fork out and get them done through FA or F+ - it is definitely worth it!

Gingers right - it cuts right to the chase.   Just a bit awkward getting the samples to FA as quick as you can .if you cant do them on the premises (long story) .. but they will advise you of what and when they need it.

Yup Ginger is right. We also had clear sperm tests post vas-reversal through our GP, but as soon as Fert Associates sent us for tests the antibodies were discovered.
