Hi,
I was just chatting with a friend, Jax and she pointed me in the direction of this forum.

I'm having a problem with my daughter Layla (who according to this web site is 1yr 10mth and 25 days old )

Anyway... she keeps getting into her nappy. At first she would take it off so I started dressing her in all in ones so she couldn't get at it. She's managed to work her way around it and just put her hand in though the leg instead.

We've tried everything to get her to stop, but she won't.

She only ever does it if its during the day and she's in her cot either going to sleep or if she's just woken up from her nap. Sometimes she can wake up and be very very quiet.

We are dealing with it now by using preventative measures. Making sure she doesn't have a dirty nappy and just checking her constantly to see if she's up to no good. Sometimes we don't get there in time.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to stop this behaviour.
I'm not really looking for ways to stop her getting into the nappy (tried em all and they don't work!)

I'm looking for disciplinary techniques to get her to realise she isn't allowed to do it. Usually she is a good kid and if you tell her no she doesn't do... not in this case.

I've asked Mum and MIL about it and they both say its just something we have to wait for her to grow out of.

Mel

Sound's like you are doing all the right thing's. Have you tried putting it on backward's? I guess it is something she will grow out of.

Hi,
Discovered "it?" Her nappy you mean?

Not sure if putting it on backwards would help because she just puts her hand in the leg.

I'm just sick of cleaning up the mess! LOL And her father thinks its digusting and could make her sick. I doubt that though.

Thanks for the reply!

Hrmmmmm... I had the problem of Han removing her nappy and playing with it... luckily at creche but wasn't a problem at home as that was one of the reasons I switched to modern cloth - little hands can't undo snaps!

But anyway, that's not helpful at all. Perhaps you could dress her in some leggings so she can't reach in? Ah crap... just realised you have tried them all.

I'm inclined to say that if all else has failed, you might just have to ride this one out! The stage will pass I'm sure!!! Good luck!

It's a bit tricky with the discipline thing, cause unless you catch her and then do time out or whatever, she may not associate the punishment with the "cause" so to speak. Probably too young for sticker charts or things like that too i suppose.

If it's any consolation, my playcentre rfeind had the same problem with her little girl, turned out she didn't like the feel of a dirty nappy and was toilet trained before she turned two!

Packing tape. Maya was never fussed on taking her nappy off but my aunty used to use that brown packaging tape to tape her sons nappy on so he couldn't get it off. NOt sure how to solve the problem of her putting her hands in the legs, but the tape would certainly stop her getting the fastenings undone. Of course it would make it harder for you to get it off too

Or maybe try cloth? Maya was in cloth flats with quite tight fitting overnappies and I doubt she would have been able to get out of them even if she had wanted to coz of the pins.

My daughter Ella did this for a little while.
We tried all kinds of different things with limited success, but in the end she either finally understood not to do it, or grew out of it on her own. (it only lasted a couple of months, which sounds long, but wasn't really!)
Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about her getting sick, it seems that most kids go through this stage Hannah used to go in through the legs too, I think because she was in old-fashioned cloth nappies at that point. Despite the summer heat, I basically made sure she was wearing tights or tight trousers every time she went to bed.... again it wasn't a problem when I was around, it was at sleep-time boredom

I'm not sure what type of nappies you use, can you get some a bit tighter around the legs without being too tight?

Welcome to OhBaby by the way

Hey,
Thanks all for your replies.

I'm glad to hear its not an uncommon thing.

I use disposables at the moment. I can't seem to find any type of clothing that will keep her out. She just takes her pants off or undoes press studs.

I'll just have to keep and eye on her and work on prevention.

Its been going on for almost a year now. At first it was cute/funny. Not its getting old.

~sigh~ Yep. Not every day of course but just when you think she's grown out of it it happens again!

I suppose I have to start toilet training her. But I don't really know what I'm doing lol.

I heard that you should start when they can indicate that they have a dirty nappy, but I've also heard someone say they started at 6 months.

My SIL tells me that you can try for 6 months until they learn or you can wait the 6 months until they're ready. If that made sense.

I don't know if this would work or if you have tried it but you could try putting the pants on and then doing up an all on one over top it might not look that flash but she couldn't get into it.
