Hi guys,

I am 5 weeks along and am a little worried that the supplements I take are not recommended during pregnancy. I've had fibromyalgia since 2010 and for some years was in very ill health and couldn't work. Taking amitriptyline improved my health and enabled me to work part time, but I hated the side effects, and eventually switched myself to a 5-htp supplement. It was way better but I still wasn't feeling my normal self. Late 2013 a friend who suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome suggested I try melatonin. OMG I have never slept so well in my life. Taking both of these supplements I have been working fulltime again for the last year and have been feeling 95% back to full health. PROBLEM: Everywhere says to avoid during pregnancy and I cannot function when I try not to take one of both of these. I take them at the lowest dosages possible. I know what the web says so please don't quote it back to me. My doctor just GOOGLED them when I saw her at 4weeks preg, and concluded I shouldn't take them at all. So please, I just want to know if anyone has any personal experience in this kind of situation and what did you do??
I am a very cautious person and have been looking after myself well. I don't want to put my baby under any undue risk, but I also don't want to lose my quality of life and my source of income in the process...! Disapprove

Hi Rach Fizz, I wouldn't know to be honest - but I understand that your quality of life is very important - I congratulate you on finding things that have improved your life.
Have you asked your midwife? Maybe if they don't know they could ask an Obstetrician for you? The other option could be a really experienced natropath?
Good luck

Thanks ginger! My issue may have resolved itself... The supplements don't seem to be having the same effect anyway so I've decided to stop taking them and see how I go. Actually slept better last night without them which was surprising! Definitely worth talking to my midwife and/or a naturopath though, so thanks for that suggestion :-)

Hi RachFizz, my sister suffers from Fibro and Lupus so I know how hard it must be for you to function without your meds. I suggest you speak to your Fibro specialist as perhaps there's a safe alternative to keep your symptoms down and keep bubs safe.
