I am 27 weeks with my second pregnancy and have GD again. With my first i didn't get GD until i was 32 weeks i have had GD from the beginning of my second pregnancy. I am testing too high and am on metformin but have been told i need to go onto insulin - i am s**t scared of needles and taking medicaion. with my first the labour was induced but went perfectly but i felt like and feel like again that GD is taking over... i am the same as with my first (i understand i may get worse) but i feel like they are making a mountain out of a mole hill as they did with my first, i get so worked up and flustered that it makes me cry, stress etc... i am not one to take medication at all as my mum brought me up on natural remedies and i am scared that i'm not that bad but all doctors seem to do these days is fill you full of drugs and not let your body fight anything naturally! i do note however that my mum is an incilin dependant diabetic and had GD with both of her pregnancies. Does anyone have any advice on how i can emotionally and physically deal with this and with the midwives (i know only trying to do their job to protect me and my unborn child).

You poor thing, thats all sounds really tough.

I would recommend seeing a naturopath or similar - they may be able to offer u treatment in conjunction with the western medicine, hopefully reducing your insulin requirements. Even if they cant do that, you might benefit from natural treatments to help with realaction, energy levels, stress reduction etc too- has worked wonders in the past for treating my pnd.

Don't be scared! I am like you and don't like needles. I was on insulin from from 34 weeks with first preg (only 2 days though as was induced and had her at 34+2 due to other complications) and on insulin from 15 weeks last pregnancy and after the 1st few days i was a pro!!!
I had to inject 4 times a day and finger prick 6-8 times a day. It was hard and i was very bruised but whatever is best for bubs.

I had 2 assisted deliveries both less than 6 hours and 2 healthy babies between 5lb 8oz and 6lb 10oz, DS had a few troubles with his blood sugars when he was born and needed to be fed 2 hourly for the first few days but no lasting effects.

Good luck!

hugs, i had gd with 1st preg from 32 wks and went on insulin from 5 wks with this one. have mine under control and see diabetic team once a month. relax as much as you can when it comes to needles. it takes practice and after a few days get used to it.
ask as many questions as you need to and dont be afraid to ask for more help or as kellz suggested see a naturopath. if you need to vent we are here 4 u.

Hang in there! I had GD too, and was on metformin and insulin to keep it under control.

As for dealing with it - remember it is only for a short time, and it really is medically necessary. I remember the team explaining how the extra glucose from my body would just flow into the baby and being horrified that he would be getting so much more sugar than he needed. And (if I recall correctly) insulin doesn't pass through the placenta so the baby is not being medicated.

My birth was a mess because of being induced because of GD, so I am still coming to grips with that for the next time around. It's very hard when you plan to have a natural, low-key pregnancy and these complications pop up and mess with everything. Hang in there, and keep thinking of how wonderful it will be once bubs is born!
