Topic: 12 week scan Posted: 10 January 2012 at 12:30pm |
Can anyone tell me if it's ok to have the 12 week scan a few days before 12 weeks?
I'm 99% sure of how far along I am so that wouldn't be a worry. I've noticed that most people seem to have the scan 12wks plus rather than prior and wondering if that is optimum for testing? It's just that I'd like to have it on a Friday when I will be around 11 weeks 5 days.
Thx

It will be fine LR, my MW told me anytime between 11 and 13 weeks, I had mine at 11/5 as well.
ETA: If they find that your dates are not accurate then they might have to invite you back for another look!

Easy thing is just to see if you can book when you want it. PN sucks and puts you in there after 12 weeks so even if you want it earlier they don't let you.

That's because scans before 12 weeks are fully funded here (I've had a couple for threatened m/c and dating) whereas scans after 12 weeks are only partially subsidised. They like to get all the nuchal scans in the partially subsidised category. Stinks eh?

They won't do a Nuchal scan before 12weeks down here. But, you can only ring them and try

I went in at 11w1day because the form said 11w onwards and we were heading overseas...no issues with funding etc but bubs was measuring perfectly to dates and was a little too small to spot what they needed to. so i went in at 12w 3 days when we got home, and tiny had had a growth spurt while we were away and was measuring over 13 weeks! But all was good.

Seriously T-Rex...that pisses me right off, I was told it cost cause it's more involved. I did know about the scan in the first tri being free. They are after that if you have a community services card, which I keep forgetting to get!

I'm pretty sure I had mine at 11w 5 days as well.
Didn't have any issues with funding - I thought it was fully funded.

Funding depends on the DHB I think - it depends what they've prioritised for funding. Possibly depends on the care provider too? I'm not sure.

I had mine at 11w5d too as I wanted to have the scan on my birthday and all was fine, they could see everything they needed and my EDD only got put one day ahead.
All of my scans have only been partially subsidised, I've paid $25 each time I go which seems pretty good considering the normal cost of ultrasounds and the fact we get a disc of images to take home Seems to vary so much place to place!

Some places charge because you get the disc and photos. Other places don't but you can pay for the disc. You should not be paying other wise for scans. If you are, ring around and find somewhere else. Pregnancy care in NZ should be funded. It should not matter if you have a cummunity services card or not!!
Baby has to be a certain length for them to measure for down syndrome. I went in for mine between 11 and 12 weeks but she was too small so went back the following week. Because of this they revised my dates by a week.
Keep in mind that if you go in early thinking you will get 2 scans, they will quickly check bubs then tell you to come back later. You will then need another referal form from your MW and the first scan will not actually really happen. Mine was over in less than 1 minute. Got to spend ages looking at the second though.

Thanks for the responses.
Can they tell straight away if there are any issues or do you need to wait for the BT result combined with the scan to know for sure? Just wondering if I will be able to tell people straight away or not (providing everything is ok fingers crossed!)

Luckyred, they measure the fluid behind the neck. They won't give you the result straight away but when I went to mine, I had looked at a picture of 2 ultra sounds. 1 good and 1 bad. My little girl looked to have a small amount so I didn't worry. Sure enough it came back with an incredible low score. Even if the score is high though it doesn't say they are down syndrome. Just you are at a higher risk. They will then discuss further tests to rule it out.

The sonographer told us the measurement of the nuchal fold straight away and said that to her it looked good, but of course we would need to wait for blood tests for a clearer idea.
Cinderella - that is not strictly true. Different DHB's allocate funding in different ways. In Palmerston North I had to pay $50 for each scan, whereas here in Nelson the scans are all fully funded.

Our radiologist was lovely and said during the scan that everything looked really good, but that full results would go with bloods to the MW. So we chose to tell everyone after the scan alone as I wasn't seeing the MW again until 14w and I couldn't wait that long! Sure enough, when I did catch-up with the MW, my odds were very low. Some radiologists don't like to say, so it might depend on who you get on the day.

I also went at 11w5d but the sonographer was about to ask me to come back a week later as she found it a wee bit early. I told her we were going on holiday for two weeks the next day so she did the scan and got all the measurements she needed. She also told us the size of the nuchal fold which was quite small 1.2 mm i think and combined with bloods gave a very low risk number for downs. Oh, and it was free at st. Georges during the week between 8am and 4pm i believe. Costs extra for picture email or cd.
