Topic: Did you birth like your mum? Posted: 08 January 2012 at 5:53pm |
Just wondering if anyone can vouch for my mums theory:
She thinks that you birth like your mum. She had 4 small babies (biggest 6.10 pound) and she had them very quickly (total labour for all 4 was 8 hours).
Her mum had small babies and she had them quickly aswell.
So im hoping that theory is right because then I will have small babies and I will have them quickly!
Interested to hear if its only my crazy mother that thinks this haha :)

Yes in that I went overdue, had a relatively straightforward labour and a average-large baby (9lb 1oz), all of which she had with each of her natural labours. There were plenty of differences, though.

Nope. My mum had both her babies early and both very average in size (lower 7 lbs) and around 12 hours or so for labour.
I went 6 days overdue, had a very quick labour (under 4 hours) and a pretty big average baby (8lb 13oz).

Nope, mum had small 7lb babies, long-ish labours (over 12 hours) and both 2 days over.
I had big 9 & 10lb babies, fast labours (5.5 and 4hrs) and 11 & 12 days over.
ETA I blame hubby for my big babies! He was 8lb something and 3 weeks early

Completely different here too. I had a big baby and relatively quick and easy natural delivery, hoping for the same with #2. Mum had to have c-sections with her two average sized babies. Pregnancies were also very different, she had morning sickness the entire time while I only had it the first trimester.

Nope - my Mum had two children - both 9lb - 10lb, and both within 2 days of due date. The first baby (me) was forceps assisted.
I went into spontaneous labour 8 days overdue, and six hours into it had a CS due to fetal distress.

My mum had 5 births, all straight forward and the longest being 6 hours.
I was induced with my DD and took 47 hours, almost needed a c-section due to DD getting stuck. May have been different had I gone into labour naturally though - we will see this time round if I labour more like her (hope so!).
My sister had an emergency c-section with her first due to no progressing past 8cm, elective with her second.
So in our case, no we (my sister and I) didn't but I do wonder if part of that is the availability of epidural's now compared to back then. I have nothing against them and definitely think they have their place (had one myself which was heaven at the time!) but its pretty proven that there is a higher risk of further intervention.

Not sure about the labours but definitely on birth size, right back to what my Gma had as well.
Back in Mum's day she was induced early with my brother cause it was labour weekend & the Ob had golf all weekend & he didn't want to be interrupted. No leading MW's back then.

Yes, so far I have. Mum had good labour and deliveries and pregnancies and babies in the 7lb region. DD was the same.

Nope. Mum had 8lb + babies and went 2 weeks over due with all 3 children. She had long-ish labours.
My son was just pushing 7lb, was born before his due date. And he literally "fell out."

Not here, mum had quickish labours of no more than 6 hours and smallish babies largest around 7lb, me I went 2 weeks over, failed induction so had cs and baby was 9lb7oz.
In saying that though both of my sisters labours were pretty quick 4-6 hours

Yes! My Mum's first baby was born with epidural and forceps then episiotomy, after about 11 hours of labour, same with me! And she had high blood pressure like I ended up getting. She was at my birth and said it reminded her so much of her own
ETA The difference was that DS was 8 pound 8 2 weeks early and Mums babies were all in the 7 pounds on time. But big babies run in DH's side of the family so I think as far as size goes, not so much, but predicting the kind of birth you could have it may have similarities to your Mum because your bodies might be similar etc

My Mum had three very different births.
First was footling breech, so a scheduled C-Section.
Second (me) was a forceps birth after getting stuck (2 weeks overdue)
Third was a text book birth (2 weeks early).
So far only one birth for me, which resulted in a ventouse after failure to progress.
Birth weights were very similar though, the three of us were plus 9lb and my DS was 8lb 6oz

Not at all the same! DP and I were small babies at Birth - I was 6lbs 11oz, DP was 7lbs 5oz and DD was 6lbs 13oz. My MIL went into labour at about 37 weeks and had an emergency csection. My mum went into labour naturally at 41 weeks and from start to finish was just under 5 hours (I am her one and only and she was told next time she'd pretty much have to camp on the hospital doorstep as she almost didn't get there in time!).
I went into labour naturally at 39 weeks. Labour was about 23 hours from waters breaking to her being born - was pretty good but was threatened with a csection towards the end because of a few issues.
MIL had 2 more babies after DP and BIL#2 was breech so her attempt at a vbac was a fail and BIL#3 was a elective. But BIL#2/#3 were about 40 weeks and bigger than DP.

My birth mama had me at 42wks via c-section. I'm unsure of her labour story as I am adopted.
My DS was born at 41w3d with epidural & episiotomy. And very nearly c-section.
I was 9lb9oz DS was 7lb15oz both 56cm long tho.
