Topic: Conceiving when breastfeeding Posted: 05 September 2011 at 9:38pm |
I've heard of people conceiving while still breastfeeding and before AF has returned. I'm interested to know how common this is! Who has gotten UTD in this way and how old was your baby at the time of conception?

I am currently pregnant with #2 while still breastfeeding DS, AF never returned, and I conceived when DS was about 5 months, we wanted them close together so we thought we would see what happened :)
Didn't come as a complete surprise, my grandmother had 14 months between the 1st & 2nd, and 15 months between 2nd & 3rd, falling pregnant each time while still breastfeeding.
I remember reading somewhere that it is the spacing between feedings that increases the chances of getting pregnant while breastfeeding, the bigger the gap between feeds the higher the chances that your monthly cycle will start up again, DS had been sleeping through the night for a couple of months when I conceived.

I was still breastfeeding, but I did have 1 period. AF came back when jojo was 11 months, and I got pregnant next cycle. I suppose all you can do is regular bd, and hope to catch that first eggie!

I was BF but on the minipill. Got AF back at 11 months and again just after 12 months. Came off the pill with that AF and got UTD that cycle. DD was feeding several times day and night till about 12 months, I think we night weaned her about the same time we got UTD but I think that was coincidence more than cause and effect.

I had three AF's before getting pg again, but DS was nursing anywhere between 12-16 times a day, which included 4-6 times overnight.
We were trying for just one cycle before getting pg this time, and were very relaxed about it, whereas it took almost 6 months of trying including 3 months of OPK's and charting.
Good luck!!!!

I conceived while breastfeeding - bubs was still not sleeping through the night so was eeding every 4 hours ish. I thought I had ovulated and got a very light period shortly afterwards. Fell pregnant the next cycle - somewhere around cd27 we think. GL to you.

It took me over 2 years to conceive while breastfeeding, which was about a year after AF returned. However, I did get pg the first month I started charting ... it turned out that because of bf'ing hormones, I was ovulating about 3 days later than normal.

I was the same as a few - I conceived while fully breastfeeding, but had had one AF before getting pregnant. I did ovulate very late that cycle (if you're going by a standard 28-day cycle), but I don't know if that's because I was breastfeeding or just my body being quirky.

Hmmm I didnt know bf can make u ovulate later in your cycle- I am using opk's tho, and have had AF back for 9 months now. Its still only been 3 months of ttc #3, but thats longer than both #1and#2 took, combined!!

I ovulated before my first AF (according to kellymom only 40% of women do), and manged to get KU. I must have ovulated when DD was about 10m old, still BFed 2-3 hourly 24/7. No long stretches of sleep here!
