Does anyone have experience with night terrors? Amelia has woken up all this week between 1-3 hours of going to sleep. Crying and can't be settled in her room. We have been bringing her out to the lounge and watched a bit of sport on tv. Last night it needed a walk outside to calm her down. I initially thought it was her teeth hurting her but I have been giving her a mix of pamol and nurofen in her bedtime bottle so I doubt it's that - although it probably doesn't help. Any experiences or advice would be welcome.

My daughter used to have night terrors, I can't recall when she had the last one TBH as I've forgotten about them. We removed additives over 2 years ago.

This might be a worthwhile read????

Hi there,

My 17 month old girl has been experiencing night terrors. She wakes up as though it was normal... and then screams a blood-curdling scream for approx 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes we cannot touch her, talk to her or anything. She doesn't recognise us at all. She rolls around on the floor almost in a trance. As quickly as it starts, she will all of a sudden turn to us and put her arms up for cuddles.

We have been told to keep our distance as 90% of the time they cannot be calmed down. And also that the child doesn't remember what happens during them, so it's best not to discuss them afterwards.

My advice if she's having night terrors is to keep your distance but keep an eye on her. And as hard as it is, just ride it out knowing that the end of the 'terror' is near. Most doctors say it's unusual for a night terror to last over an hour.

Hope this helps a little...
(this is our experience with night terrors, things might be completely different for others!)

DD has been waking everynight for the last week or so about 1hr after going to bed. She sounds absolutely terrified and when I go to get her she is sitting up in her cot with her arms up. She grabs me so tight when I pick her up. i don't make a fuss of her though and just say 'shhhh you're OK, Mummy's here now' then I change her nappy and put her back to bed and she seems OK. Sometimes she will wake again another half hour later but I just do the same and put her back to bed.
Hope it stops soon tho! Don't like seeing her sad and upset like that It may not be night terrors, cause it's not as sever sounding as the above post obviously, but it's not like her at all

Thanks guys for the ideas. It seems to me that she is very similar to your child nzlisajo.

I asked her why she woke up crying as I wondered if she was also teething (2 yr molars). I asked if she was teeth sore or scared. She said scared. I asked her why and she told me big birds... on two occasions that I asked her.

I told her that the birds wanted to play and be friends with her. It seems to have helped and she doesn't wake screaming anymore.

I know that they are not supposed to remember things with night terrors but terrors are supposed to start earlier in the night and "normal" nightmares are later.

Who knows but I appreciate your input. At least I have an idea of what I am dealing with so I really would like to say thanks.
