Hello ladies,
I HATE HOSPITALS. And just wondering for those who have had a no complications birth, how long were you in hospital for after bubs made an appearance?

With Alex I would have been out within 2hrs but he was early and they wanted to keep us in for 6hrs to make sure his temp stayed the same. After that I was gone!

With DD I was in for a few days but thats just cos it was my first and I wanted to be although it wasn't really that nice TBH.
But my friend was out within 3 hours for each of her two so spose if you have a confident M/W and no issues then they should let you go home.
I probably will stay one night, maybe with this one but also on the other hand don't want to be away from DD at all!

Where do you live Kelzie-Rose? I can't speak from my own experience, but I know a few friends that had their bubs at the hospital then transferred to a birthing centre after a few hours so they still had support without being in the hospital.

You could always homebirth? 
That was my plan last time, but we had complications so ended up in hospital for about 24 hours. DD was born about 8 hours after we arrived. I was in no physical state (nor was DD) to leave the day she was born, so stayed overnight and left first thing in the morning.
This time I'm hoping to avoid hospital altogether.

I'm on the North Shore in Auckland. As it's my first, I'm thinking that a hospital birth would be best, but hate hate hate hospitals.

Sorry, I don't know too much about the shore (I live down in the Waikato), but I get what you mean - DF has been hinting he'd like me to deliver in hospital and then transfer to a birthing unit, while I'm very anti-hospital and would prefer to go straight to the birthing unit. Maybe talk it through with your midwife? She might know the average stay time in your local hospital.

you could transfer up to Warkworth Birthing centre (or you could birth up there as well). I transfered there with #2 from North Shore Hospital and I loved it up there.
With #1 I stayed in the hospital but with #2 I had him at 8.30am and left by midday- I was ready to transfer by 11 but had to wait for the hospital to process my blood results.

I delivered at north shore hospital kelzie... Tbh they were fantastic! But didn't have room in their maternity ward so we were transferred to warkworth birthing centre which was oh my god even better! Good food, good midwives , peaceful environment...I didn't want to leave...;)
I think normally you have to book but I heard that they are expandingtheir facilities so more rooms! But honestly if I can I'm gonna go there next time too... Plus cos it's so "far" from my family in takapuna we didntget many visitors and really got to bond with ds ... aND dh got to stay with us for the first night... Bonus!

I don't know if it's the actual hospital that I hate, but each time I'm been to a hospital I've been incredibly sad (miscarriages) and would rather be at home. I get physically uncomfortable quite easily and would prefer my own bed and my own place.

Ended up back at Waitakere which I hated, next time I'm going to Birthcare or Helensville.

I hate hospitals too and couldn't wait to get out!
I had complications with #1 so had to stay longer than i wanted. But with #2 i had her at 3pm and left the following morning. I think it was around 10am 'cause that's what time my MW finally came to see me. I didn't even wanna stay that long but my daughter had quite a bit of mucous so they wanted to keep an eye on her. Plus i had been induced (labour didn't progress after my waters broke) and had to stay hooked up to the syntocinon drip for 4 hours after i had her due to the risk of my bleeding like i did with #1, so by the time that had finished and they had finally taken the drip out it was getting on so it was better to stay anyway.
Oops that was a little bit of a novel.

That was my experience of hospital too prior to having DD. We unfortunately ended up with a c-sec due to her being breech and had to stay 3 nights (was supposed to be 2 but we didn't get deposited in a ward til after midnight). We transfered to a birthing centre afterwards for 2 nights.
I'm in the Waikato so not sure how different it might be but the hospital stay was horrendous. Even though I had a private room it was so bloody noisy I didn't sleep a wink which was not fabulous after a 43hr (sleepless) labour  There also seemed to be a new midwife looking after you everytime you turned around and they all had conflicting advice. Plus DH wasn't allowed to stay 
I can't recommend the birthing unit we transferred to highly enough. The midwives were lovely and there was more continuity of care. Having your partner able to stay and help (especially when recovering from c-sec), and the peace and quiet (SLEEP!!!) was incredible.
If you decide to birth at the hospital and have a complication free birth you should be able to transfer within hours, either home or birthing centre. The birthing centre isn't for everyone but being first time parents we both found it reassuring to know someone was there at the press of a button til we got the hang of things.

I had my fist son at North Shore. TBH I have been in and out of hospitals and can't stand the place. I would have left straight away with the first but was made to stay over night. There were lots of visitors but I believe they have gotten strictor with that now.
#2 I had at waitakere. It was amazing. Because I had one at home and wanted time to bond and rest I stayed 5 days. I loved every minute. It was very quiet and peaceful. Visitors were for a short time twice a day only.
My friend transfered to a birth centre. She loved it but the baby got a cold due to the transfer.

It is good to know you can transfer from hospital back to a birthing centre, I was wondering if that was an option - sharing a room with 3 other ladies doesn't do it for me in hospital. I think that is what I will do - all going to plan of course!

Kelz you can deliver at Nth shore and transfer to either Helensville or warkworth or if your midwife has access actually deliver at either place. Or you can go home. The thing with public hospitals is that they can't make you stay or leave. However if you chose to leave earlier than they feel is safe they may make you sign a form saying that you chose to leave AMA or against medical advice. This will protect the hospital and staff from repercussions if things go pear shaped.
DH has only ever had horrible experiences with hospitals and really doesn't like them. He's had to process a lot to get comfortable with the idea of being there with me for Grublettes birth. It might be a plan to talk to your midwife about your feelings regarding the hospital and she might have some other suggestions for you.

Hi Kelzie  Although we can stay up to three days at my hospital you can leave after just 4 hours if everything is ok! The midwives will just come and visit you at home. I don't like the idea of sharing a room with up to 5 other mothers and babies  So hoping to stay at the very latest just one night there.. we are 5 minutes away if we need to go back anyway.

Hey Kelzie, it would be good to discuss those feelings with your LMC and perhaps look at ways of managing any anxiety you feel?
I had to go to ED two years ago with bad asthma and was put opposite the room that I lost my daughter in - I burst into tears and made my asthma much worse. Even though I worked at the hospital, and had no problem going there everyday, I hadn't confronted the locations that were very stressful for me. I spent the first half of my pregnancy trying to work out clearly what my pregnancy/ birth fears were, and the second half working out ways to manage them. I was then able to enjoy the birth and postnatal stay.
Just a thought if the hospital is your birthing destiny - if there is no choice to birth there then you will need a good plan to deal with it.

I'm thinking of going to Waikato and you are the first person I have heard talk about it. My reasoning is to be transferred to the birthing unit after. I tend to agree about hospitals, but the private one I had DD in was fantastic, would'nt have wanted to go home before I was ready as you need all the help you can get as first time Mum, and after 4 nights following CS I was ready for home and felt a lot more confident with everything.
