Topic: Membrane Sweep?? Posted: 11 June 2011 at 3:00pm |
My doctor did a membrane sweep on me last Monday and all it did was give me painful cramping for 2 days and a bit of bleeding. I did lose my mucous plug that night though. I'm due on June 19th and I'm going back to see my doctor on Monday and she wants to do another sweep. The first was really painful and she was quite aggressive.
Was just wondering if anyone else had this done and if so, did it work for you? What symptoms did you have afterwards?

I had one and it did nothing. Looking back now and after doing lots of research I should never have got it done. The more you play with someones cervix the more you hinder it in doing its job. It is designed to function without someone 'helping' it along. Your body knows what to do, let it do things on its own, dont accept intervention unless its very very necissary

I didn't have one and my mw didn't 'believe' in doing them before you were 7 days overdue. If you aren't ready down there then it does nothing, especially if baby isn't ready to come out yet.
ETA: I had one done in labour, I was 6cm upon arrival and mw managed to stretch me about a half cm.

I had one 2 days before I was due and baby arrived 12 hrs later, but I think I actually started stage one when I was on my way to see my MW.

I had one at 5 days overdue and yes it was painful, went into labour a few hours later and bubs arrived early that evening but midwife said that things were pretty ready to go when she did it.
I am suprised they would do one when you are not overdue.

My midwife tried to do one about a week prior to my due date but bubba was just to high for her to reach well, she kept popping in and out. It hurt like hell and I thought I was going to wet myself! I did have period like pains for about 24 hours and very strong BH's or maybe they were contractions but I still ended up going over and having a c section

i had about 3 haha but then again my bub didnt want to move until i was 13 days overdue, and my MW didnt do one until i was almost a week over, and thats coz i begged her to in the end lol. they didnt do anything immediately after, other than help me lose my plug and i cramped up quite a bit, tho to me they were uncomfortable (the first one was the worst..) but not hugely painful..if they are that painful to you im thinking the doc is doing them unnecessarily and your body isnt ready- e.g if my MW couldnt feel i was "getting ready" up there, she didnt force it. in saying that, i do think the sweeps, and going overdue i suppose and having so many false starts, contributed to my really straightforward "easy" (for want of a better word lol- more like manageable than easy..) drug free waterbirth.. so i dont think they are a waste of time. but if you are uncomfortable about having one done when you arent due, you have the right to say no and wait until you are overdue etc- coz as others have said, if you arent ready, nothing a doc does will make it happen sooner.. try to let it happen naturally if you can, do things like go for walks and spend time on your hands and knees (i did the gardening) to encourage bub to get into the right position etc. but other than that, just TRY ( i know, easier said than done) to relax and await the birth of your beautiful bub

With my last child (no4) I had one done, but i was already in labour.
Sometimes i wonder why some midwifes do them for some before their due date. Because the midwifes i've had never even offered to do one for me, even when i went 13 days over my due date with no3. No2 i went 12 days over and wasn't offered one either.
Relax, if it works it works...baby will come when they want.

I had one done at 5 days overdue, i'd already lost my plug and was 1-2cm dilated (MW wouldn't have done it if my cervix wasn't "ripe"). I had a lot of bleeding and dull cramps all evening. The sweep was around 4.30pm and my waters broke midnight and contractions started 1am.

My midwife didn't offer one till I was overdue either. I had two, neither encouraged Bubs along. I'd say if you don't want one, say so!!! It's not like it's essential or anything, it might burry Bubs along (and I know you get a bit over being pregnant in the last few weeks) but trust me, they'll come at some point without one

Thanks for your responses guys! This is actually my second child and I'm already 4cm dilated so she thought she could get things 'moving'. I suffer from SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) which has me hardly walking and in lots of pain which is why she offered to do one in the first place. My biggest concern was going in on Monday and having her do it again all for nothing. My due date is in 8 days anyways so I'm pretty close. With my son I went 3 days overdue so let's hope this little one makes an appearance either before or on her due date!

I had 2 over the space of a few days as I went overdue but it did nothing. Ended up having DD 14 days passed due date. It was the threat of impending induction that got her to finally decide to get things going!

I had one with my eldest, she was born 2 days later,I didn't have any cramps or anything before hand.
With my second I had one...had cramps and "ooh is this it" for the day,and then nothing,he still came 8 days late.
This time my MW didn't bother, for which Im glad,I don't think it would have done much good....you may just be too early,my MWs always did them when I was due or just over.
ha,NzlisaJo,My 3rd did that too..."im comfy here thanks...what? induction? better get out !" haha

Hey guys!
I ended up going into labour on my own on Sunday night and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on Monday June 14th at 12:52pm. Her name is Adelynn Katherine and she weighed 5lbs 13oz. I think the scare of having another membrane sweep on Monday shocked my body into labour haha!
