Topic: Probiotics in pregnancy Posted: 10 May 2011 at 9:41pm |
Does anyone have any views on probiotics during pregnancy?
I am battling eczema and have been suggested by two different people that a probiotic supplement may help (and may help reduce the chances of eczema developing in baby).
Of course I've done some googling but I'm aware all organisations and websites are going to have their own bias towards what they're selling.

I've used probiotics during both my last two pregnancies on and off for other reasons. I know the Inner Health range do a special probiotic aimed at eczema. I believed it is recommended that the mother takes it during pregnancy and bf then it can be given to the babe after too.

that's what I'm worried about Emmi_ - I'd hate for baby to wind up with it. Do you have any allergies or eczema yourself?
And which type are you taking?

I dont, but DH had eczema as a kid and has allergies (no food ones tho).
Ive just been taking the Inner Health one, our eczema nurse didnt have any tips, she said there isnt any research done on how much you need to take for it to have any effect, so Im just taking the max and crossing my fingers!

Ooh I would like to know this too.. I take them to help with IBS and won't be a happy chappy if I have to stop taking them when UTD. In some places it says not recommended but doesn't sound like it's that much of a no-no

I am going to speak to a paediatrician from our church tonight to ask his advice. I'm confident he will give me a scientific, non biased opinion. Of course he doesn't deal with babies in-utero but he does deal with children.
I'll keep you all updated.
Rach all the best with your TTC :)

I took the inner health eczema sheild while pg and bf'ing.
I had eczema as a child and there is allergy's in the family, so thought I would do all I can to decrease the risk.
There is a study done on the LACTOBACILLUS RHAMNOSUS strain which is in the inner healh eczema sheild powder.
From what I can understand it decreases the risk of ezcema occuring in the time you/they are taking the powder, but doesn't change your predisposition to it. so once they stop taking it, they may still get it.
Heres a link to an abstract about the strain
Also you may want to look at this link which has more info about the product link
My boy has just started getting eczema around his eye, so perhaps the probiotics delayed him getting it, and not such a severe case? Who knows. But I will be taking it again next pregnancy.

My hubby gets bad ezcema, and need to put steriods on his skin most days to manage it, the ezcema runs in his family. When pregnant, i went to see an allergy specialist who said if I minimise dairy, eggs and nuts while preggy and breastfeeding, it would significantly decrease the risk of my baby inheriting the eczema since the allergy switch would be less likely to be triggered. My bub is now 6 months, and gets some dermatitis, but nothing like the ezcema my hubby had as a baby. I've just started taking the Ethical Nutrients Eczema Shield and it seems to be making a difference with clearing up the dermatitis. I plan on keeping on taking it while breastfeeding and when I become pregnant again. Incidentally, my hubby is taking it too and reckons his skin feels heaps better.
Its not cheap to buy though - anyone know a cheap place to get it from?

I heard that it might make bub less prone to colic too?

Has anyone taken probiotics to help with colic? I've been reading that lactobillius reuteri (SP?) decreases colic in babies if mum takes it shortly prior to birth and while breastfeeding?
I'd really like to avoid having another bubs with chronic colic!

Taking probiotics in pregnancy is meant to help with loads of different things... including preventing pre-eclampsia.
