Hi ladies

My history....in my last pregnancy I ended up with pregnancy hypertension (High BP) and developed pre-eclampsia and was induced at 38 weeks, I was medicated from 34 weeks for the hypertension.

I went to the ob today and I asked him if I could be pre-disposed to getting hypertension again following my last pregnancy and his short answer was yes, he took my blood preasure and has suggested I take asprin once a day to help with keeping my blood preasure down

Has anyone else taken asprin during pregnancy?

I did during my last pregnancy. I had mild PET towards the end of both previous pregnancies so the OB put me on 75mg of aspirin a day (Heartcare ones you can buy at the supermareket cheaper then chemist!! Not subsidised so watch your local supermarket for specials!!)
I took it from 20 odd weeks until 36 weeks. (You need to stop it then as it is a blood thinner)
I had no problems with it at all, and my BP stayed pretty stable throughout (had odd "up" readings, but not enough for concern!!)
Congrats on your pregnancy!!

Yep. My MW referred me to a specialist at 14 weeks and I was prescribed aspirin and calcium to be started immediately, because of the PE with my first pregnancy. The prescriptions only costed me a few dollars so I'm pretty sure the low-dose aspirin is subsidised. And yep had to stop them at 36 weeks. As well as the aspirin and calcium, I also had to have growth scans every 4 weeks from 20 weeks and also to check blood flow. BP behaved and had no probs, actually going 3 days overdue with a healthy nice sized baby.

I'm a bit puzzled why your OB hasn't just prescribed you the aspirin, or mentioned calcium. My MW and specialist were singing the praises of studies proving that taking both can help reduce the risks of developing hypertension leading to PE (hence why most heart attack/stroke patients end up living on asprin and calcium to keep their heart health and blood pressure in check). One thing to note though when taking the calcium is that too much calcium can inhibit iron absorption, so by 28 weeks my iron levels were very low so I had to take iron supplements to counteract the effects of the calcium.

I had severe preeclampsia and DD#1 had IUGR and was delivered at 27 weeks due to all of this. Second pregnancy I was put on low dose asprin and calcium from 8-9 weeks thru till about 37ish weeks. DD#2 had no major issues and was a healthy full term bub and I had only had the odd high BP. Taking the calcium and asprin again this time around too.

If the OB had suggested it I would take it :) I just use cartia or the heartcare ones from the supermarket, basically whichever ones were on special at the time.
