Topic: International travel at 20 weeks Posted: 26 February 2011 at 1:49pm |
DH and I won flights to Los Angeles and they need to be used before June. We are thinking of flying when I will be 20 weeks at the end of April.
Does anyone have any tips about flying that kind of distance, what helped you if you flew pregnant? I am thinking I'll have to get some of those gorgeous stockings but can't really think about what else I might need.

My friends are flying home to Brazil and she is going to be 27 weeks - they were told to ask for the very very front seats for more legroom (and i think the wing seats have more legroom too but its also an emergency exit so not ideal if you can't help out) drink like a fish and walk around as much as possible.

Oh yay, thats exciting lucky you! I flew to London at 20 weeks and back at 23 weeks. Going there was easier than coming back.
Yes take stockings as your legs may swell up, mine did on the flight home and it hurt. Try to walk around as much as possible, especially if you have a stop over try to do as much walking as possible while on the ground. There is usually space at the back of the plane where you can stand and walk about and not bother other people. Drink lots of water and eat when food is offered. You can also ask for food and drinks in between normal meal times.
Take some ginger tablets and paper bags so if you get sick you can deal with it ok. Exit seats are good cos they have more room.

Thats a good idea about ginger tablets. We have a stop in Sydney (taking the long route to LA) so will definitely get up and walking.

I've just returned to the UK at 29 wks pregnant (came out to NZ at 16wks) , obviously walking around and drinking lots is really important, put the stockings on at home cos if you have a bit of a bump then getting them on in the airport / plane is a total drama lol you gotta wear them!! Ask for extra seat / leg room when you check in, I had a toddler with me both there and back but and we got extra seats on 3 of the 4 legs. I'd also recommend rescue remedy just to keep your mood a bit more even, tho you won't have a toddler pushing your buttons being uncomfy / tired can make things feel more stressy than normal.
Buy a bottle of water after security, that way you can just hand it to the cabin crew to refill regularly. Take some cereal bars just to have on hand if you like to eat small amounts often. Other than that all i can think of is wearing super comfy clothes and don't go overboard with hand luggage, just a light bag of essentials. Have a great time!!
