    Posted: 07 February 2011 at 1:20pm
I found out i was pregnant last friday and since then I have been thinking about when is the best time to contact a midwife?

Do I do it straight away and risk looking like a fool for having a midwife at 4 weeks 3 days? Or do I wait until I have had my 7 week scan at the fertility clinic and am no longer under their care?

And what about birthcare? I have been thinking it might be nice to have a birthcare birth. Not quite a hospital, but not a home birth either.

Any advice ladies?

Do it now, most people do it as soon as they get a positive result. It is amazing how fast some midwives book up. And no you you won't look silly.

Whereabouts are you?

Double post! Oh and congrats by the way.

There are some awesome midwifes around so maybe some of the ladies on here can give you recommendations. But depends where in Auckland you are.

I am in South Auckland (just) but my GP is in Auckland.

I might talk to the nurse on Friday and give my GP a call to see if they have any recommendations.

And I think I might contact the birthcare teams to see if I can tour the facilities to see if it is something I will like.

DO IT NOW!!!! First time around I contacted 13 midwives before I found one that could take me and that was 3 yrs ago....its getting worse these days, so it pays to be in quick. Lots of midwives can deliver at birthcare or at auckland, so ask that as one of your questions. You dont need to decide now - in fact its best to let your pregnancy progress a little first, as if you have any complications (or decide that you want pain relief) you will need to deliver at either Auckland or Middlemore.

Congrats on your BFP!!!

Congratulations.

Yes do it now!!! The sooner the better.

My friend left it until 7 weeks and nearly all midwifes she rang were already booked out for her month

Thanks all.
I am out of town for work for the next few days but I have made an appointment to see my GP and have gotten the phone numbers for the two midwives that work through my GP's practice.

Where else do you find midwives?

Congrats on your BFP, its great to see you in the preggy forums now!

I waited til after my 8week scan to try and find a midwife and they were all booked out, so yeah definitely try and get one as soon as poss. You might want to checkout the 'recommend your midwife' posting on here, think it is half way down on page 2. Good luck!

congrats on your BFP!!!

Like other have said get a MW as soon as poss... I just googled MW'sin my area... also search for past threads on here about MW recommendations.

One more thing dont be disappointed if a lot of the MW prefer a first time mum to give birth at a hospital not birthcare...

Huge congrats!

Just wanted to say that I gave birth to my first at Birthcare and it was beautiful To be honest, it may be worth asking on the phone when you ring the midwives whether they'd let you deliver at Birthcare as a first time Mum. And if possible, go with one who will. I think there's some old threads on here about birthing at Birthcare that may be interesting reading

Congratulations!

Yes, chiming in to agree - I started looking as soon as I found I was UTD, and a few midwives were already booked out.

I'm amazed that some mmidwives wouldn't let a first-time Mum give a birthing centre a try??! I didn't want a home birth, but didn't really want a hospital birth either, and RiverRidge was exactly what I was looking for. I'd do what arohanui suggests when checking out midwives.

yeah massive congrats to you, nothing to add that others haven't said. Totally recommend the Parnell Midwives - all of them are awesome, and they aren't just based in Parnell.

Birthcare have tours (i think on Thursday and Saturday) it says on their website. National Women's has a virtual tour of their facilities on their website but you may be at Middlemore.
