Topic: Raisin Obsession Posted: 31 January 2011 at 12:22pm |
DD (18 months) is obsessed with raisins. I try and only give them to her as treat food, so in the car or after swimming. But lately she's been asking for them all the time.
I try and either distract her give her an alternative such as an apple. I'm wondering if I should just tell her "no' and stick with and have the battle with her? She's a great eater so its not like she's actually hungry. Her verbal comprehension is good and she understands "empty" and "gone", but she still presists.
Has anyone had a similiar problem? What worked?

Had the very same issue, and 'no' was the only thing that worked for us too, as well as keeping them out of sight.
If she asked, I just said 'no' and if she cried about it I would just ignore her. Meanie aye lol

crackers (actually potato chips, DS calls them crackers)
DS loves potato chips and if he knows there's a chance he might get some there's no shutting him up till he has them.
He was worst of xmas when at social gatherings there was often a bowl of chips around. After one birthday where he managed to eat an astonding amount of chips for someone only 2 1/2 feet tall, he refused most food for 2 days, always asking for crackers.
Then, at dinner on the 2nd day he gave in and started eating normal food again.

I hid the raisins for a while and told her they were all gone from the cupboard and showed her they weren't where they normally are. I felt mean but she was asking all the time and it was driving me mad. I have just started giving them to her again after about 2 months of no raisins and she's been pretty good so far.

Campbell goes through phases of this too! I have a "one packet a day" rule, so once he has his little packet for the day, there's no more! He'll usually have a little tanty (or occasionally a big one!) then get over it. He got used to this rule fairly quickly, actually! Same rule applies to other treat food.

lol! Same here! Mum put some chippies on the coffee table and I think she ate more than 8 adults combined. I told Mum, well if you out there she's gonna eat it.

Fruit bar (or anything thats wrapped like one) was ours. I reckon it was DS first real word!! He just had to walk past the pantry and he wanted one (doesn't eat it, just wants it)
I just said No....and I said it a lot, and there were usually tears.....now he's moved onto "Grapes please". Not sure I'm quite as tough with this one...I mean its fruit and he uses his manners!! But he would eat the whole bunch if he could...

Love the way they think "please" makes it OK! Its very cute.
Have ignored it today and it seems to be working.

Someone suggested to me having a "snack box" for each child in the house. If you have the limit of snacks for the day in a named container (ie a packet of raisins, 4 rice crackers, a banana, some cheese etc), and they can choose each time they want a snack, they soon learn that each day you can only have "one box of raisins, but I can have a rice cracker with cream cheese and tuna, or a banana" instead. We used to have issues with DS wanting WAY too many bananas, this system worked great

DD loves raisins too, but then I think she likes anything thats in a little container or packet. We get those rice wheels and she has them I give her the pack yet she's still to finish them in one sitting so not worried about that. With the raisins I bought a big bag and some small containers and she has a handful in those, she just throws them about if they're in the little box. Works great so far!
But as I said put some crackers, or grapes, some mandarin segments anything in a small container and she gobbles it up
