Hi. My 19 mth old has had a bath with his dad every day pretty much since birth. Loves the bath and happily splashes.

He has always cried when l am in the shower and really seems scared.

I have been gently coaxing him in for the last few weeeks and a couple of times he has come in he has actually enjoyed it. Mostly he wont get in or cries when he is in there. Bizarrely when l say do you want a shower he says yes and runs excitedly to the bathroom but backs out at the last minute.

We go away a bit over summer and it would be so much easier if he would shower.

Any ideas on how to overcome this would be greatly appreciated!

You could try getting one of those cheap shower attachment things that fit over taps and get him used to the shower sensation in the bath first?

Maybe try playing in the shower cubicle as well without the shower going so he gets happy with that bit and then work up to showering?

my kids hated the shower unless i was holding them. i think it can be quite scary sitting on the bottom with all that water coming down on you.

Tibby, H is not so sure about the shower either - we sit him in the bath and then just hose him down (we have a shower head that we can move) But he won't stand under the shower.

DS didn't like it much either but lately we have just been standing him in it and letting him hold the shower head and just play with it. He still doesn't partically like the water on his face but he is getting used to it.

DD loves the shower but we have showered with her from week 1. Try having a shower with him, or DH doing it hold him up and make a game of the water on his tummy and back making sure you keep the water off his face. DD still doesn't really like that. Is the shower over the bath? Turn the shower on to fill the bath perhaps and sit him in it if he will.

yes as the others have said my boy only likes it if he is holding the shower head. We took a little 3 ring blow up pool away last year to use as a bath. All the cousins had heaps of fun it in.

I might see if l can get one to put on the bath tap as l think that sounds like a good idea.

My DD (21months) hates showers too, even if we're holding her she screams the entire time so we just do a quick rinse of her bum and let her run away. She doesn't get scared of me being in the shower though, just hates being in there herself. Hope your DS comes around soon!

My DD was like that too. I put her bath toys in the shower and put a bath mat down.
At first i turned the head away so she was only getting a bit wet. It took maybe 3 goes before she started loving it.

DS has only ever showered as we don't have a bath.

I find he enjoys it much more with toys especially filling cups up from the shower, and we put a large flannel over the hole so it fills up like a bath so he can have a splash. Oh and bubble bath in the bottom will distract him from the water too.

In saying that he still remembers last time we went to nanas as he had a bath. They way he talks about it, I think the bath was more fun than his shower!!

We have put DS in the shower every night instead of a bath. He is getting a bit better each day.

The toys in the shower and filling his little boats up with the shower water seems to be helping.

Fingers crossed

DD was exactly the same, even down to the screaming when I was in the shower. We just kept trying, holding her to start with and letting her play with the water and eventually she came round to the idea, and now she loves it.
