Topic: No weight gain yet Posted: 03 December 2010 at 11:54am |
My girlfriend is 16 weeks pregnant but hasn't gained any weight yet. She is just under 5" tall and was 40kg before pregnancy and is 39.5kg now. Her tummy is growing a bit, but she's a bit leaner now. She had bad nausea for the first several weeks, then it went away, but it's back again now and she has started throwing up. Mostly just retching and not losing much food, but the nausea is making it hard for her to have much food. It's our main mission at the moment to up the calories. I'm a bit worried about the lack of weight gain at this point, but I'm hoping her appetite increases and nausea decreases over the next weeks. Anyone else in the same boat?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless she is really slim. I started off at a particular weight at 6 weeks pregnant & I didn't reach that weight again until I was 24 weeks. I lost a huge amount of weight from nausea.
Just make sure she gets little bits of food often. My hubby used to cook me a lamb chop, mashed potato & some pea every night. Was about the only thing I could handle.
If you are worried about the nausea, speak to your mw. She'll be able to suggest options.

I wouldnt stress about it. You arent really meant to gain much weight until the third trimester. Talk to your midwife if you are concerned. I lost around 10kgs during the start of my pregnancy and now with a month left i have put on 5kg, but bubs is growing and healthy

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I only got back to my pre-preg weight at 25wks.
I had morning sickness just like her. Found that eating carbs really helped to keep it in control. I also found that if I had lunch out at a cafe then I was more likely to eat it.
Main thing is that she eats what she wants when she wants. And avoiding sweet foods also makes a difference. And not fighting the need to throw up also helps most people.

Like the others said its ok - i lost a bit of weight throwing up/not being able to eat in the first trimester and it wasnt until i was about 25 weeks that i gained any weight at all, and i'm only up about 8kg total at the moment.
Mention it to her midwife - mine gave me a thickshake recipe that had yeast and all kinds in it to make sure i was getting all the healthy things i needed and a drink was easier to keep down then solid food. I think she called it "tigers milk"

I didn't put on any serious weight until the last 3 months (about 14kg) but gained 2kg from about 3-6 months. First 3 months I lost 4-5kg.

With my first baby i totally lost my appetite and lost 3kg during the first trimester. When i was 5 months (can't remember exactly how many weeks) i had only put on 1kg. Buuut i made up for it in the end and packed on the weight. Haha.
With #2 i was STARVING so it didn't take long to put on weight. But i didn't put on as much weight as i did with #1.
