Topic: 3 year old wont sleep Posted: 26 November 2010 at 9:55pm |
Our daughter was taking an empty bottle to bed with her every night as a comfort item.
We got her to give that up only a month or so ago.
When she had the bottle we'd send her to bed and she'd be asleep in 15 minutes or so. Since giving it up it takes her 3 to 4 hours to go to sleep.
I'm at wits end! It doesnt seem to make any difference if she has a nap in the day or not.
How do we help her to get to sleep at a reasonable hour? She's only falling asleep between 10pm and midnight

does she have another item she can use as a comfort item? We have recently got Ella to give her up her blankie but she still has 'teddy' which she usually cuddles in bed.
Also is her room dark enough in the early evening? Or is she too hot (since its got a bit warmer we have to have the fun on low in Ellas room and then I turn it off before I go to bed).

Her room is quite dark and she has a nightlight if she wants to use it. She's never had another comfort item but putting a doll/soft toy in with her hasn't been helping yet.
We'll try the fan thing! She gets hot easily so maybe that will help

Could you give her the bottle back? I'm afraid I am of the 'do whatever it takes' when it comes to getting some sleep!!

Hehe... its tempting Caro!
I just dont think its a good idea to go backward. She'll learn to sleep without it sometime, wont she?
I'm having visions of this continuing for years. Last night I went and lay down with her around 22h00 and she fell asleep pretty much as soon as I lay down.

Is she staying in bed or continually getting up?

Could you give her bottle to the "bottle fairy"?
When DD1 was the same sort of age, we struggled to get rid of her dummy. We ended up writing a sparkley pretty letter to the dummy fairy, and putting it in the letterbox with the dummy for the fairy to take to a new little baby. She loved the sparkles, and she loved the idea of being involved with helping a little baby. Never had an issue again.
Otherwise, good luck!! 3 year olds can be very very testing!!

To me it seems that the bottle was her sleep association and without it now she doesn't quite know how to relax and go to sleep without it.
IMO you need to replace the bottle with another sleep association which is usually easier to introduce when they still have the original item, then wean from the original item.
You could test the theory and give her back the bottle and see what happens. If she starts going to sleep straight away then you could start introducing a new item, maybe something that can be sucked/chewed so that it is similar to the bottle.
Or you could try the bottle fairy item and then the fairy gives her something else to take to bed.
The trick would be to get her using a new sleep association which could be music, talking books, a toy etc etc
Good luck
