Those who have had or are planning a home birth, did you show any articles to disapproving family/friends? Or did you just let them think what they wanted to?

If you did show articles, which ones? I've read the ones on the home birth aotearoa site, but just wondering if there are any other ones that would be relevant for trying to convince certain people that it's not as bad as they think it is

Oh No Rachel! I hope they arent being too annoying.

Have you talked to your midwife. When i went through birthworks they let you take some of there library books home. My friend got an awesome one on homebirth from them. This was over a year ago now. But you could perhaps show them that.

It must be annoying though, id just tell them to keep there opinions to themselves. I have an annoying MIL this pregnancy im putting my foot down with her, or telling DP too lol

I am planning a home birth. Do not bother trying to convince anyone about their safety etc, as most people are very closed minded about it. As long as you and DH are happy with the decision that is all that matters.

I haven't even told Mum that we are having a home birth. I brought the subject up once and her ignorance on the subject really irritated me, especially as she started to lecture me on how irresponsible it was, so I dropped it.

However the homebirth UK site is really good for information - here

Good idea Sabrina, I didn't think to ask my mw! I will ask her in a couple of weeks when I see her! Families eh
I'd love to tell them to butt out haha but I'm too wussy! Although when my mum said "ooh. Oh. Ummm" and winced after hearing about our home birth plan, I just said politely "thank you for supporting our decision " and she said "yes true, it's your decision" (and she has come round to the idea now after coming to my last mw appt and seeing that my mw is very experienced in home births and does in fact know what she's doing!)

ETA: Thanks hila! Yes there are some people (like grandparents) I won't even bother talking to about it because I know there will be no convincing them!! And thanks for that website, going to have a good read now (ps best wishes for your homebirth )

Try this website, it's AMAZING! It rocked me to my very core at first, but it has also changed me for the better in regards to homebirth:

Joyous Birth

Also try this blog:

Homebirth: A Midwife Mutiny

and this one - Gloria Lemay is awesome

Gloria Lemay: Birth Blog

A few people I know freaked out, especially my mum, but beyond explaining what our reasons were I wasn't going to force the issue since nothing they could say would be changing my mind.

It is also worth having a look at Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering - a book by Sarah Buckley, who is trained and practising as a GP in Australia but has had four home births.

Have you joined the Wellington Home Birth association yet?  They should be able to lend you articles etc.  You could even invite family/friends along to their meet-ups so they could talk with other home-birth parents about their experiences?  All the best for your birth .

Ah Rachel tell them to mind thier own business for once and keep thier crazy opinions to themselves. Then give them my MIL's number and they can all catch up for a bit of coffee and crazy together

Check out the Mothering website- it's a natural parenting magazine (I LOVE it) and they have articles plus an amazing active forum and you will no doubt find exactly the sort of info you need there :

www.mothering.com

Also, I have heaps of their magazines so next time you're over just look through them cos heaps of them have articles on home birth (incl the latest which was about unassisted home birth I thought THAT was brave lol)

Congrats and welcome to the club! We had a HBA2C on Xmas day last year and my mum was pretty anxious about the whole ordeal. I had her on my birth team as my prayer warrior for spiritual covering. She was just worried that due to my history that my body wouldn't cope but I told her that if anything went wrong that my mw would be expert enough to get me to the hospital. Did that alleviate her fears? haha not really..my sister later told me tha while I was in labour my mum was crying in the bedroom! and then when bubs was born she was crying out..oh why isn't he crying? Cry baby cry!..to which I replied no mum he's just fine, babies don't cry when they're born into an atmosphere they are already familiar with (I was just saying that but that was how I felt)..my mw checked him and pumped 2 puffs of air into him and he gave a wee wail, not a scream or anything and my mum felt better...later that day I told her that homebirths are not like hospital births, sterile, strange surroundings, unfamiliar sounds and people so of course babies are going to scream their wee heads off...she was quite adamant that all babies are meant to cry to announce their arrival..I told her that for our next bubs (due in 5 weeks hehehe) she might not get the phone call until after new bubs is born! lol Stick to your guns honey, you don't need to justify your decision to anyone...all the best
