I found myself a lovely MW for the homebirth that we would like to have but one concern keeps coming back to me so I thought I'd run it past the many of you who have been through a homebirth already.
My Mw only graduated last year so her experience is a lot less than I would have probably liked but is this really a bad thing? Of course a second mw will be attending the last part and she has a lot of experience e.g 15yrs experience but just not sure about my mw. She has attend homebirths before but I'm not sure if I"d be her first where she is lead Mw. I know someone has to be her first but not sure I want it to be me.
What would your thoughts be?

I personally would want someone with more experience as my LMC. I am having a home birth too and one of the reasons I have a lot of confidence in my mw is that she has a lot of experience delivering babies - both in hospitals and at home.

Perhaps you could change to her back up midwife as your LMC, and then have the other midwife attend your home birth as the back up, iykwim? That way she will still be there, getting the experience, but you can feel confident that your LMC really knows what they are doing.

But go with your feeling - if you are comfortable and confident with her, then stick with her, but if you have doubts then change.

From what I have heard of people studying Midwifery in their last year or two, they have to assist in a lot of births....

TBH there is no way I would have a recently graduated MW for a home birth. All well and good if it all goes to plan but if something was to go wrong I would want a MW with plenty of years experience. JMO.

I'm planning a home birth too and am really comfortable with my midwife as she has a lot of experience. I definitely wouldn't want a recently graduated midwife as my main LMC for a homebirth, but would let her be backup. I've had two appointments with my midwife so far and both times she's had a student mw with her who is really nice and I'd be happy having her at the birth as the backup. Good luck with your decision

Ok so I'm not being crazy thinking that I want someone with more experience. I think I will try to get the back up mw as my first mw.
Just incase I can't does anyone know of a good central/west auckland homebirth mw?

You're definitely not crazy first.

I'm having a hospital birth and even I didn't want a recent graduate so my MW has quite a bit of experience.

Having said that, a friend of mine had a midwife with less than one years experienced and she LOVED her. They were similar ages which helped I think. She did have a hospital birth though, where there is more support if your MW has a question or something goes wrong.

If you're not sure if you'd be her first as LMC i'd ask her! If you find out she's already done 10 homebirths as lead, would you feel better?

Other then that i'd say have her partner as your LMC, her as backup. If you're comfortable with her, she can do most of the work but you always have that experienced other watching on. If t

Congrats

No way would I have a new grad for a HB MW (but I'm medically oriented and would want all the safety nets!). I've heard too many stories of 2nd MWs not getting there in time etc.

Kelly - my MW always has a final year student with her (there have been 3 so far) and it's been interesting hearing about what they haven't seen - e.g. a waterbirth or home birth. I think it's person by person.

Thanks Flissty.
I will call my MW tomorrow and talk to her about the possiblity of having her backup full time. Cause I guess if that wont work I"ll need to get onto finding a new mw quick smart.

My midwife Gail Kiss who is out West was awesome, I had a lovely (well as lovely as a birth can go) water birth at Waitak and she has done lots of home births and most of her babies were homebirths as well.

Honey just ask her. She won't be offended as she's still new and her role would be to allay any fears you have. All the best with your final decision. Do what makes you feel most comfortable. My MW has over 20 years experience in HB which is why I've kept her for this second one.

So I spoke to her and I am going to swap to one of the other mw's in her group. Just waiting to hear which one. Thanks so much for all your support and advice on this one.
