Hi Folks,
Hopefully some of you can help me with this - should I buy/hire a capsule, or just go straight to a convertible car seat (am planning on a Cosco Scenera)?
I haven't decided what stroller I will get yet, but it is unlikely to come as part of a travel system, so any capsule is unlikely to be compatible. So in that situation, when/how often would you use a capsule, and is it really worth it. I suspect most of the time I would be using the car to shopping/out for coffee etc, which are generally 5-10 minute trips, or alternately long trips (>1 hour).

I didn't bother with a capsule 2nd time around. I used a sling a lot & I also took our rocker places with us, better for bubs than lying down in the capsule anyway.
Anyplaces I was going up town I took the buggy. Supermarket either went by myself or popped him in the sling.

Not sure about the convertible car seat as havent seen one before but I hired a capsule from baby on the move for 6 months (cost about 100 or 120 for a new one) and that didnt come with the wheels that you can get- mainly cos i dont like those we got a pram that could lie flat, but yea id hire rather than buy they're in them for such a short time, we only used ours for in the car (to malls, out for coffees etc but he wouldnt be in the capsule) but it was really handy to have while we had it

I didn't get a capsule, and for the most part it was fine, but I did find I'd sometimes avoid stopping somewhere if baby was asleep cos I didn't have the option of taking her in without waking her up. So it did mean I didn't always get everything done. It was also a pain if she fell asleep 20 minutes or so before we went out - I had to wake her to put her in the car and she often wouldn't go back to sleep. That said, I have a phenomenally terrible sleeper, so with a *normal* baby that might be fine anyway.
If they are $100 to hire, I'd just purchase one - you can get several for around the same money. I think I will probably get one next time.

We brought our capsule on sale for $120 and then we decided to buy the base too for another $70, we didnt mind buying as it was for our first child and we figured we could use it for other siblings in future.
DD is still in her capsule as it could go up to 13kgs in weight and she is only 8.5kgs so we will continue to use it until she gets too big for it (she is 9.5months) we do only leave it in the car now unless DH is there to carry it and its only when its night and cold outside or she falls asleep in it.
But when she was younger it was invaluable sometimes when just popping in to somewhere eg supermarket, fruit store, dairy etc you can take the car seat with you rather than getting out the pram or having to hold bubs - it also attaches to supermarket trolley so I didnt have to use the grotty baby seats there. Plus when visiting people we would carry her in, in her capsule.
But it does depend on your lifesytle and if you dont think you will need one dont get one, as you wont know any different and everyone is so different in there needs with a baby - you could always get one later or for next baby

I found the capsule great but I think next time I will probably just wear baby tbh... Although it was great for when they were still asleep to carry them round in without waking them when they'd just dosed off...

We hired a capsule and snap and go (wheels) from the baby factory and found it just so useful. Really good when transferring baby from car to snap and go - didn't need to move or handle her, so if she was asleep she would be more likely to stay asleep. Also good for bringing in from car to house etc. Would hire again for number 2.

WE hired ours from plunket (inc base) and spent 50$ for 6 months (and it was new)
I LOVE it! Its been fantastic! really worth its money when DD has fallen asleep and I dont want to wake her, really handy in the wet weather as you can get her in the carseat and cover her and put her in the car with out her getting wet. Will def get one next time

Im so pleased to see this thread - i have brought a convertable car seat - but i see so many people who carry baby around in the capsule (to friends, to dinner, into stores etc) but i think i would just take my moses basket to friends if i was planning a long stay anyway. Reassured that i'm not going to be bummed out about my not capsulated carseat now, thanks

Had one for the first. Found it got heavy very very fast and I don't like the position they are in in it.
This time I don't. Am just using the convertible car seat and its fine. Don't miss the capsule at all

I tossed up whether to bother with a capsule too and in the end I bought one brand new for $70. I'm glad I did, it was great for kindy runs and quick trips when DS fell asleep in the car and I didn't want to wake him. He was only in it for a few months but I still think it was worth it.

Off topic but OMG Kebabkat I just noticed you had baby!!! Ok slightly slow here!
Back on topic, didn't buy a capsule, DD if we needed to just transferred her to and from when she was in her carseat, even now I can pick her up if she falls asleep in the car and transfer her to her bed. Little bit different in malls and the pram she normally wakes up but its alot noiser there

Depends on baby too, DS is terrible at waking up, ie if he is asleep in his carseat and we try to sneak him into his cot, it doesn't work...so some babies easily transfer, some don't.
Whereas a few times he fell asleep in capsule so would leave him in for the next half hour or so to let him sleep...even tho I knew that is 'not recommended' lol....I took any sleep I could tho as he wasn't a good sleeper!

We had a capsule and I found it fabulous, being a winter baby it was nice to get him ready to go, and get myself ready to go, in the house and then would only take 2 seconds to get him into the car when it was cold or whatever
We don't often leave him in it but it makes it easier getting ready to go in the house

Thanks for all the tips. I think I will stick with the convertible car seat, but if bubs is not a good sleeper, then we'll consider hiring a capsule for a few months.

We had a capsule but DD grew out of it by the time she was 10wks old. We sold it on tho and pretty much got our money back for it so that was good. It was handy to have if she'd fallen asleep in the car. We could just take her in to the shops etc as is. Will prob just use a sling or something next time round tho
