Breastfeeding clothes

While in hospital i lived in BF singlets, just the el cheapos from kmart. I bought a couple of nice tops for out and about, but basically any loose top, or top that stretches and snaps back easily will do if you dont want to spend more money on clothes you have no idea how long you'll even need them for.

Most of my maternity tops double as nursing tops so I'd get my moneys worth from them, Kmart and PP have a few good ones available that dont have to cost too much, look on TM, or go to the PP outlets and you should find a few

Yeap, when I was BF DD I lived in singlets (It was summer) but on cool days ya just throw a cute cardi over top and your dressed like everyone else. BFing singlets are fabulous.

I was a cheapie and just continued wearing most of my regular clothes you can always pull up t-shirts and difficult tops, and if your worried bout your belly showing when BFing then you can double up with a singlet underneath.

I would totally reccommend a bf singlet in your hosp bag and comfie trackies or PJ's

I'm still in these, under my normal clothes. Much comfier than maternity bras, and they hide my yucky stretch-marked tummy!

I wear a BF bra with BF singlet over top (or a boob tube top) and just any old top over top of that.

BF singlets are exactly like bras, but a singlet IFGWIM. They have the clips and pull down parts like a BF bra.

 

In the early days when my breasts were sore and full I just lived in BF singlets, no bras. And if I was going out I'd put an easy access top over the top (cardis and button down tops etc). I found these the easiest while getting BFing established.

Fair enough phantom, Ive only been thinking about it cos I got onto my hospital bag early and then all of a sudden I was like OMG what about after? Such a planner hehe

@Phantom re: night leakage - I wore a feeding bra and just used breastfeeding pads to soak up the leakage, and had a towel under the sheet in case it soaked through. I was too hot for anything else (and it was Autumn/Winter!), and didn't want to bother with tops in the middle of the night. I had A LOT of milk with DD, and that worked fine for me - although I used decent breastpads, not the 'budget' brand. Bear in mind you are getting up several times in the night to feed, so you don't have to go all night in them :-) By the time baby is sleeping through (DD was at 7 weeks ish) your milk should have regulated enough to not be squirting out copious amounts all night!

lol bowie, not always. You'll prob leak a fair bit ( I always found if I'd had a dream involving Jae feeding and/or crying, I'd wake up soaked!), and the squirting is very common when you start feeding (let down can be pretty forceful in some women!) but I did the same as muppetsmama, slept in a secure feeding bra, night time pads (J&J do a daytime/nightime disposable, I 'd their nighttime ones, not so much their daytimes, pigeon were the best as they had 2 seperate adhesive strips to stop 'bunching' in the middle of the night) and a towel underneath JIC, plus the towel was handy if bubs snuffled around and took their sweet time getting a proper latch AFTER letdown started, saved getting milk all over the blankets

During the day at home I just wore the singlets and had a loose jumper to throw on if I needed to nip up the road to do school pick-up etc, and had a couple of nice nursing tops for when i went out to coffeegroup etc

lol the squirting can happen in the middle of the let down. It's slightly embarrassing in public otherwsie ...meh *shrug*

I like the idea of BF singlets *instead* of bras....BUT I have big boobs at the best of times so I found the singlets just didn't give me enough support iykwim?

But yep each to their own, I've met heaps of Mums who want to cover their tummies up, I was just not concerned enough about that TBH but whatever makes you feel more comfy sounds like a good plan to me!

I would recommend cloth breast pads. I found them to be much more breathable and comfortable. There are lots of people that sell them on trademe, but would probably be really easy to make yourself.

Personally I really liked the bf tshirts with a horizontal zip (off TM). Nice and simple and practical. To start with I wasn't comfortable fiddling with layers of clothing in public - that came later!
