Topic: Visual distrubances - Low iron? Posted: 15 September 2010 at 4:11pm |
The last couple of days and very frequently today I've had spells where I'm seeing lots of black spots or stars in my vision.
I don't feel dizzy with them and they generally only last a few moments.
My risk for PE is very low, I've had only minor swelling in my fingers and my BP is always reading on the lower side of normal.
I'm drinking lots and eating plenty.
The only thing I can think of is that my iron levels are quite low, Fe was 5 at 28 week test and Hb 117.
Has anyone had this symptom with low iron?

Yep sometimes. Its definitely not all the time but I do get it sometimes. I thought it was more to do with my BP being lowish than iron

Oh... I got that! And I did have low iron, although I didn't connect the two myself and it could just in a coincidence.

Mine was to do with BP not iron as well. I actually fainted whilst preg as a result of it too. Umm the only other thing I could think of was had you eaten/drunk enough? And also do you suffer migraines? Visual disturbances are one of the symptoms, although you'd probably know if you had a migraine!

Yup, mine was iron related, but only started when I started taking the pills. I swapped to a liquid supplement instead

Thanks everyone.
I did wonder after I posted if it could be related to the low BP, but I've had it all the way through and never had the visual thing like this before?
Maybe it is a combination of the two, who knows!
Always good to know I'm not the only one though

Apparently it has to do with the increased blood volume in your body when pg too. I had it last time in the third trimester, usually stopped after fluids and a lie down if I could manage one.

I got it a few times with C and have had it once or twice with this pg too. No low iron here but I found that a cold, sugary drink and a lie down helped things really quickly.
It's a pretty weird feeling though eh!

I experience this too Mel. It could be blood pressure as this does fluctuate during the day, but like you, never got dizzy with it, just saw stars etc in my peripheral vision. I think my dietician associated it with dehydration, but I can't quite remember. I have low iron too though- my haemoglobin is okay, but stored levels are very low.

I get this too, more so when I get up quickly or move fast. My midwife told me it was just normal with the extra blood flow.

hmm I had severly low iron but I never saw spots and lights, I just felt light headed and a bit dizzy sometimes.
I thought seeing lights and spots was a sign of low bp and could mean PE? I would ask your MW about it chick!
