Hi all

Until recently my toddler loved the shower and used to come in with me. He would happily let the water go over his head but wouldn't let us shampoo his hair under any circumstances

Unfortunately I wrecked it all by washing his hair and enduring a screaming fit from him Now he won't even go in the shower and his hair is so scruffy. I don't want to wet it in the bath incase he them goes on a bath strike. His hair hasn't got wet in a good few weeks and it needs it.

Anyone been through something similar? I have tried bribery, even offering ice cream as a reward at 7.30am Should we just wait and let him come around knowing that could take ages or just endure the tantrums and make him shower once a week?!?!?

TIA

my wee girl loves the bath, but as soon as we try and wash her hair it's all over... she'll scream down the house and scramble out of the bath... it's awful eh... I barely wash her hair anymore. We are just slowly working on wetting her hair. We have a doll so she does it's hair and I wet her hair... every now I brave shampoo but usually when one of us is in the bath with her as she is more tolerant then. She use to hate the bath because of hair washing so I'm reluctant to push it too much for the same reason as you...

I find the bath easier than the shower as you can scoop water up quickly and pour it over and you have more control over it.

Have to say, we're nasty parents and just do it anyway but Dan's reaction is to cry for 3 seconds and then he's fine, so it's obviously not such a big issue.

Can you get the dry shampoo and use that?

Is he more interested in the bath if it's a bubble bath (and no pressure to wash his hair)?

i dont use hair products on my kids, they arent necessary. if their hair is particularly dirty then i put some baking soda in the bath water to help ... and i quite often just run the flannel dripping wet over their heads ...

We hardly ever wash daniels hair. He asks for it because we don't force the issue and even then its just water, not usually shampoo. Hes over 3 and we haven't even finished a bottle of his shampoo yet.

Have you tried goggles? You might need some too to show him how cool they are to have under the water or do something goofy like that.

Thanks everyone.

He loves his bath and didn't used to have an issue with the shower. It is just since I washed his hair that he had a total meltdown and now won't go near the shower or even let us wet his hair, in any way. The best we manage is if it is raining

I just wish I had never bothered trying to shampoo his hair and left it as it was.

Haven't thought of goggles but I don't think the issue is water in his face - it is that I made him have his hair washed and he doesn't want it done again. I guess he associates shower with the trauma of having your hair washed.

I think, as you said Kebakat, I might have to wait until his hair is itchy or bothers him and let him ask for the shower. Options are limited really unless I frogmarch him in and hold him under the shower. Not really a fan of that though, as that is what has got me into this situation. Guess he is just being wilful but he looking really scruffy too

Don't get me started on a trip to the hairdressers. He really lost the plot them and ended up with half a haircut because they couldn't finish I think he is very 'hair-sensitive', hopefully he grows out of it soon

Jake screamed for probably at least 6 months with hair washing - which made it worse and he would end up with more water in his eyes but I must be a mean mummy cos I kept washing it! I try to do it weekly, but its probably closer to once every two weeks, so I can avoid the drama (unless it has food/paint etc in it). He still has a little panic, but now that I've taught him to look up at me so the water doesn't get in his eyes hes much better. (It all started when he wouldn't lie back to have it washed I think). But mostly he is OK now. Morgan has just started crying, but 2 seconds later they are over it and back enjoing the bath!! She also cries when I get her dressed and struggles/cries when I change her nappy --- but these things have to be done so I just ignore it and do what I have to do!

We had hairdresser battles about the same time with Jake, but with bribery (lollipop) now he will sit still.
