Topic: Toilet Training - Poo issue!! Posted: 23 April 2010 at 9:57pm |
My three year old refuses to do poo in the toilet! He is fine with wee (although he does need to be reminded occasionally and almost always gets there slighty too late leaving a residue in his pants!) but absolutely REFUSES to do poo in the toilet. He does a poo every night at around the same time, in his nappy (which he still wears at night) after we have put him to bed. He has even done it while we are standing there talking to him about how he has to do his poo in the toilet. I fear it is becoming a real emotional issue with him and don't know how to resolve this! Any suggestions???

I just read about this, that boys do often have more of an issue with this than girls. The book says that "boys in particular may find the transition to the toilet daunting, and often do not like the sensation of pooing. If there is any anxiety, be patient."
It doesn't really say much else though, other than don't force him, offer encouragement and that he'll get there in the end.
Good luck, hope you get past this!

diane levy has a method with starts off with getting them comfortable with pooing in the correct room to start with. so telling them we do out poos in the toilet, if you want your nappy on tho thats fine... then getting them to sit on the toilet, still with the nappy, then i think the cuts a hole in the nappy - only good with disposables of course - and then they are doing it on the toilet. i think i can take a while though.
my son used to poo in his nappy at bed time too. so we extended bed time out and got him to sit on the toilet before bed every night. one day he did actually poo on the toilet and after that he was fine...

Thanks Bizzy! I'm going to try just getting him to poo in the toilet room, even if it is in his undies.

My daughter took quite a while to come around to pooing in the toilet and regressed a few times after we thought we'd cracked it.
My best advice is don't push it. Any pressure we put on Ella just made it worse.
Just relax and focus on not letting your frustration or impatience show.
When she was on the toilet for wees we'd always ask her if there were any poos there too and then we'd say 'Oh well, maybe next time eh?'
I'd read stories to her and sing songs when she was willing to sit and try, to make it fun for her but always let her get down when she said she wanted to.
We made a big deal of any success too.
Oh, the other thing that helped was putting some loo paper down before she tried because the splash freaked her out.
Good luck!

We are in the same boat. DS is 3 1/2 and we have been TT for over a year. No trouble with wees, but no. 2's are a real problem
We have even gone back to pull-ups because I was getting stressed having to wash the undies out every day. We had the same problem where we would just have the discussion about how he was a big boy now and where would he do his poo's "on the toilet mum" would be the response and not 5 mins would go by and he would have pooed in his undies.
It's a long hard road in our house. Hope DD will be easier.
Good luck to all those mum's out there trying!

I sit with Lochy while hes on the toilet and we talk about poohs and pull pushing faces etc and giggle about it, and he's been an absolute dream to potty train!
We's never had a potty we've always used the toilet, whether that makes a difference or not, Im not sure, but good luck :)

After Jake started using the toilet it took him maybe 5 months to start going poos on it!
Another reason they TT number 2s slower is coz its not always easy for them to recognise the sensations for what they are and suddenly its 'time to push' and thats that!
I just left the toilet door open for him and didn't worry bout it - I'd use a liner in his knickers and just clean him up without comment (always in the toilet so he could see where the poos was sposed to go) and one day he yelled out for me coz he'd decided to do poos in the toilet but since he pees standing up and puts the seat up he didn't think to put it down again, sat on the ceramic lip, lost his balance and slid bum-first into the toilet and got stuck LMAO thankfully it didn't put him off and he started getting to the toilet on time regularly after that.
Be relaxed and give it time. They're still littlies.
