Topic: Asthma in a 1 yo Posted: 08 March 2010 at 10:52pm |
My DD has a nasty cough but no temp or being unwell otherwise. So doc is sending her off for chest xrays and has put her on ab's just incase it is a chest infection but he is more concerned that she has asthma. She's had the cough for a week but the last couple of nights she has horrid coughing fits in the night and is then unconsolable won't be held collapses on the floor - which just makes her cough even more.
The doc said it is hard to diagnose asthma in a toddler. Has anyone had a toddler with asthma? what were the first signs? And is it something they might grow out of? I'm really hoping it is just a chest infection!

My DD was diagnosed with asthma when she was about seven months old. She would be coughing in the night and in the morning and Doc listened to her chest etc and seemed convinved that was it (after ruling out the chest infection)
We got an inhaler for her and gave it to her three times a day for a week and it certainly improved things. After that the doc said just administer as needed, so we just give her a couple of blasts when she is sounding very coughy and rattly and it helps straight away. I have never noticed her fighting for breath though, but i suppose asthma can take a few forms.
We have only had to use the inhaler on a handful of occassions since she was first diagnosed, and the doc said that most babies grow out of it by about two years old.
Hope your wee one is ok soon

Did your daughters cough sound ike she needed to cough out phlem? Does the ventalin clear up the rattle?
THe doc thinks she is getting so distressed coz she is finding it hard to breath but she doesn't wheeze?
It doesn't help that I don't know anyone that has asthma...

you have a good doctor doing xrays..covering everything............my boy has asthma after having RSV and hospitalised at 2mnths...started inhaler (blue at 1) only took this if he was coughing uncontrolable.........then i got new doctor and he started him on orange inhaler for day and night and has been primo since.........asthma isnt a biggie i would rather controlled asthma then infection as ABs (too much) break down imune system in the young..but the inhaler isnt all good either.......ask for the blue and give her 2 puffs when she is starting to cough and see how it goes....that is wat we did.........i had coughing like you daughter when i was young.......i have now grown out of it but have it re-occuring when i have flu or a majorly stressed (usually before dance comp) i also got it near the end of each pregnancy.......our house is so drafty that i wouldnt be surprised if mia got it too

the coughing does sound phlemmy (spelling?). She would cough so much she would vomit which obviously distrssed her. We never noticed what i would call 'wheezing' though.
The ventolin defintily cleared up the rattling too, and very quickly.
As Tysmummy says, it hasn't been a biggie for us, and DD did have a chest infection once which was much more taumatic for her
Let us know what the doc says

Thanks guys! Ashlee has bronchopneumonia, which is treatable with antibiotics, although if it is viral she will just have to fight it on her own as the antibiotics will only do there job if it is bacterial.
Not caused by bad parenting either :)... At the docs i'm asking is it becasue she is too cold, should we heat her room up, she dribbles a lot so maybe she is getting a cold chest. The doc said its just one of those things. Set my mind at ease.
