Topic: Entertaining a 16 month old Posted: 05 March 2010 at 8:10pm |
I am just looking for some ideas on how to entertain our 16 month old girl. I am just feeling that all I do at the moment is stop her getting into stuff that she is not suppose to have and saying no all the time and it is wearing me down and her I think! She has such a short attention span ( i guess this is usual at this age!) that nothing I do seems to engage her. We have a reasonable amount of toys and belong to the toy library, when the weather is fine I just leave the door open and she potters around outside, plus we live on a farm so when possible she goes out with her dad to 'help'. I am feeling like a bit of a bad mummy cos I am not really playing with her and things I try don't really work, i.e. drawing she just eats the crayons so I put them away, I try to read to her but she generally gets off the couch half way thru the book etc etc. Is this just normal for this age or are there some things that anyone is doing with there kids that they seem to enjoy? Also thinking that cos I am pregnant it would be nice if there was something that she might sit still for 10minutes so I don't have to run after her!

To be honest I very rarely sit down and play with my kids, I may be a bad Mum but I just don't seem to be able to do it. Instead I invite them (well Jack since Ben isn't old enough) to help me with my jobs. Jack loves helping hang out the washing, he pegs stuff on the clothes horse and when he was younger he used to pass me the pegs or run through the washing that was hung up. He helps get tea ready, gets the carrots from the fridge, watches me peel the veges etc. When he was younger I gave him bowls, sppons etc while I baked. This is all I have really done with him. Plus he is quite good at playing by himself although he changes toys quite often. I have also divided up his toys into 3 boxes and he is supposed to (I often forget) get a differnt box each week so it is almost like getting new toys all the time and he seems alot more interested in them, plus I got sick of having so many toys spread out over the lounge floor.
Hope some of my waffling is of some help

My DD is 15 months so similar age and some of the things I do to entertain her are:
- the toy swap thing as mentioned by Linzy is what we do here as well and it sure does make it seem like there are new toys all the time, its great!
- put a whole lot of interesting (safe) things e.g. hairbrush, big hairclips, compact mirror, small toys, sunglasse case, sometimes a box of raisins, an old wallet with some cards in it etc. into a handbag that I am not using and let her empty it out.
- put some sand in a bucket or big plastic container with some cups and spoons etc.
- same as above but with water in it I also have some big rocks and shells that she plays with.
- before I go to bed I sometimes build a whole lot of things with her blocks for her to knock down in the morning I also do this if I am sitting on the floor with her, I don't get to build much before she knocks it all down.
- go through old magazines and pull out pics of things like food and animals and stick them in her scrapbook then talk about them with her, DD loves eyes, noses, ears etc at the moment so I cut lots of those out
- make playdough, DD did eat it at first but soon learnt that it was yuck and now just pulls it apart into little bits but keeps her entertained for awhile and I just make sure its only on the lino as I hate to think what a mess it would make of the carpet
- put some sheets over a clothes horse or some chairs and put some toys in there - this keeps DD entertained for ages
- sit on the floor and read books with her, I find she pays attention and then wanders off but comes back if I start reading another book out loud
- and when all else fails I put on a DVD and this normally entertains her for 15 - 20 minutes
With most of these activities I am not directly involved but sitting or doing something nearby and talking with her about what she is doing and if I can I get some housework done and just check on her regularly except if its water then I stay with her.
Hope something there will help you out.

let her play in the pot cupboard or with the plastic containers...
and yeah get her to help... all my kids loved helping at the clothes line, passing pegs etc and that is a good time to talk about colours too and numbers.

Some awesome ideas in there Aimee. I too struggle with JJ as he is so boisterous and busy. He generally just runs around getting into mischief, but we do a lot of boisterous play.
He has his own drawer in the kitchen and I am constanly changing over what is inside. He's fascinated with lids and containers at the moment, so it's pretty easy for now!

at that age Ella used to (and still does) love playing with her water table. we found a doll that she could wash, so she gives her a bath in it and washes a lot of her smaller toys.
is she interested in dolls at all? Ella was just starting to get into dolls then, so anything to do with them (putting them to bed, feeding etc) was a hit.

Hi
My bubs is the same age and I'm always trying to think of things to do too. Sitting still isn't the little missus idea of fun she is always on the go. She has plenty of toys but nothing holds her attention for long. I too feel like I'm saying no a lot of time. DH works 7 days a week and I work 5 days so she gets a lot of variety at Daycare and them its mum and bubs a the weekend with mum scratching her head.
Yesterday we had the Wiggles on at I was trying to get her to wiggle! I'm off to google and see what I can come up with.

I'm like Linzy - as Bethany wouldn't really sleep at all during the day for the first year, she's had to learn that mummy does her jobs while she's up. It means she's grown into helping me with them - she loves passing me the pegs to put washing on the line, helping put the ingredients in when we're cooking, handing me washing to fold, following me around with her own lil duster, etc...
Like Heidi'smum I'll often be doing something nearby while she plays, rather than spend the whole time sitting and playing with her. We do sit and play or read together often, esp when she asks (if I can at the time), just not exclusively!
The best kind of toys are definitely those that aren't toys at all! My kitchen cupboards and drawers have been rearranged so they're mostly child-friendly at the heights she can reach. Means we get all sorts of unusual things on the floor (plus lots of noise at times as she loves the sound of metal measuring cups on our tiles lol!) but she has fun and entertains herself. And when you're trying to get dinner made or dishes done, that's what counts!
I dug a little handbag out of my cupboard that Bethany loves filling and emptying it with all sorts of things. (It's hilarious to see her trotting around with beads around her neck, handbag on her shoulder, pushing a dolly in her doll's buggy lol!)
Bubbles are great - $2 shop has a bubble gun that I was hoping Bethany would be able to work by herself but it's a bit hard for her yet. She loves watching me shoot bubbles into the air though!
On some of the hotter summer evenings I've taken a bowl full of water out onto the deck and given her a few kitchen things to play with in it. She loves it - can't get enough!! A friend used to set up her baby bath on a towel in her kitchen so that her boy could play with the water that way. Another friend sits her little girl on a stool at the kitchen sink and fills that with water.
Hope that gives you some ideas :-)
PS love the sheet over the laundry rack idea, must try that one!!!

Oh - and music makes the world of difference in our house too. We put on Pukeko stomp or something similar and dance around like at mainly music. Puts both of us in better spirits, then we can keep dancing while we get things done too.
Also - don't know whether you've found it to be the case or not, but if the toys are all out and the lounge is a mess, Bethany seems to get bewildered and somewhat bored by her toys. If we put them away and give her a clean slate to start with, she's happier pulling things out one by one and plays for longer. We also have quite a range of places/toy boxes where toys are stored. There's her big toy box in the lounge, plus a few ground level shelves dedicated to her toys/books, two baskets of younger toys stored under the coffee table, then shelves in her room, a few things tucked away in her cupboard and a little box in the spare room. She can go and get any of them out herself and it's surprising what she'll discover any given day! (Lol the plan was actually to hide them and rotate them, but she was too quick for us and seems to rotate through them herself lol)
ETA - We haven't tried crayons, but we did use some washable markers the other day and Bethany had a blast for about 15mins till she was ready for the next thing ;)

They are such wonderful ideas! The bag one works a treat for us at Church, but I can't do it at home. It without fail leads to tantys, because as soon as I pick up a bag, it's time to go out according to darling DD!

LOL we do a version of the handbag for long car rides...i pack an old backpack of hers with a few books toys and stuff and she "discovers" it while we are driving...takes her a while and sometimes will have a drink or snack in it too....
playdough is great...and if you have an outdoor table then use it for painting as well. Best painting for that age is those books that you use water on and they cahnge colours - ie you not painitng a certain colour etc ($2 shops have them)
also baking muffins - we do a betty crocker box - easy as she can tip the ingredients into a bowl, mix water in, tip the tin of fruit in and then put into muffin tins...and you dont have to worry about measurements etc for baking...and then watch it cook and butter etc when they come out!
big clippos and lego etc or the fisher price block keep them occupied for ages....sitting on the floor building towers can waste a lot of time too....
ellas fave helper thing to do is to fold laundry (i personally hate it myself!!) - i give her the flannels, her undies, and hankies etc to fold....and put away...i give them to her one at a time while I am folding and keep sher busy for ages!

Thanks for all your replys, this has actually been a really good topic to see how other people keep their kids entertained! I am going to print this out and keep it somewhere handy to pull out when I need it.
