Topic: Permanently runny nose Posted: 01 December 2009 at 8:12pm |
Hi there, my 2yr old son constantly has a runny nose. Usually greeny/yellow and particularly bad in the mornings. There are days when he is dry but for the most part I am wiping his nose every few minutes. I have taken him to the doctor several times and there is no infection. I thought he might be drinking too much milk but Plunket say No, his intake is fine. I am about to get a blood test in case he is allergic to any food groups but the professionals I have spoken to think this is unlikely. Any thoughts anybody?

My daughter has food allergies, and gets allergic rhinitis (aka stuffy nose) from it. I had to convince even our specialist that the food was the cause of it, as generally nasal allergy issues are unheard of under about 2 years. The allergy specialist even made us go to an ENT specialist and we had xrays and a camera up her nose (poor wee thing) to see if it was adenoids, but it all cleared up within a couple of weeks of cutting out the food groups she is allergic too. Natalie also had eczema, and hives.
Having said this, Natalie never had any green/yellow mucous - it was always just clear. It does sound like more of an infection to me, but I'm guessing he's been on antibiotics and that hasn't cleared it up?
Has it been worse since hayfever season started?
Good luck figuring it out - at least an allergy test (I would opt for the RAST one, as it's more definitive) might provide some answers?

God i could have written your post. My 18 mo has been like this for about 5 months non stop now. I could count the days on one hand in that time that we have had a dry nose day.
I have just decided to go to the dr and try him on a course of antibiotics as it usually greenish/yellow in the mornings. If that doesn't work i might see if we can explore some other options like allergies. If you figure something out for your boy please let me know!
Tysmummy - how do they test if adenoids are a problem because yes Alex snores and always has and wakes most nights and makes a bit of noise and then goes back to sleep.

I can answer the adenoid Q - as we had that checked out with Natalie as well. For us, it was an X-ray, and then a camera up the nose (which was not pleasant!). Generally I think an ENT specialist would have to make the diagnosis of enlarged adenoids.

never had an xray.....the dont tend to do this on small kids as they dont get true results..............there suppose to see them with a type of mirror they put in there mouth and look at the back of there throat its further up then tonsils so harder to see.....with my son who had ears infection non stop i booked him in to get grommets and they said they would look at the same time......and they ended up getting them removed............i would ask your doc to look into it...........especially if he has saw throats all the time as apparently they do tonsils and adenoids together (in most cases)

Thanks Ladies for your input. Have just gone down the track of blood test in case there were any food allergies and all thats produced is a low iron count (dont think that would cause a runny nose). We have a follow up appointment on 21 Dec so think I will ask about the adenoid thing and maybe get referred to ear, nose and throat specialist. Will keep you posted. Hope you all have a good Christmas

We just went to see our dr today and he agrees that it sounds like adenoids. It also showed up fluid in his middle ear which will be affecting his hearing and so we are off to see the ENT when we get an appt. He thinks he may need grommets and possibly adenoid removal too.
Thanks girls for putting us on the right track. Hopefully my snotty toddler and sleepless nights should get sorted...just in time for the next baby!
