Topic: Breakfast dodger Posted: 25 November 2009 at 8:23am |
No matter what I do I cant seem to get him to eat breakfast!
He has a bottle when he wakes up - he normally drinks about 150mls, but then I cant get him to eat breakfast - no matter what time I offer it.
We have tried dropping the morning bottle, but it ends in tears and tantrums, and given that we have only just got him sleeping through the night, I am scared to drop it in case we regress on the sleeping issue.
What do your kids eat for breakfast? I try to offer toast and some sort of fruit, he wont touch cereal of any kind, and he wont eat eggs...any ideas?
If he doesnt eat anything then by 9am he is starting to get grumpy because he is hungry, so he has a very early morning tea (1st morning tea...)....
Any ideas?

How old is he? Could you offer a smaller bottle?

My girl still has a BF at 6am, then breakfast at around 7-7.30 - normally toast, she likes cheese spread or pate on toast - I tried offering all the normal spreads (marmite, honey, peanut butter - PB was an epic fail, turns out she's got a mild allergy, even jam) but the only things she likes are the grown up options. We have a piece of fruit around 9 as well.

Thanks for the ideas!
Flutterby - he has just turned 2.
Might try the smoothie idea - not sure he would drink it, but worth a go!

How long has it been going on? We went through a phase of it here, for about a week I think. They're back to 'normal' now thankfully.
Oh and I used smoothies to drop their morning bottle (after breakfast). There was something appealing about drinking blue milk (blueberry, banana, milk)

Even though you don't want to, I'd be dropping the breakfast bottle, as it'll be filling him up. He'll protest for a while but will soon get use to it. It shouldn't affect his night time sleep, given the timing of it.
Smoothies are great. Eva also loves crumpets (especially raw), english muffins, rices, cornflakes, porridge.
Good luck!!

I'd drop the morning bottle too - you could start by offering it in a cup with breakie, then moving it to after breakie, then forgetting to do it. We dropped it when Jake turned one, which meant he was hungry and happy eat breakie as soon as he woke. Now that hes older he eats it 30-60mins after getting up. When he had the morning milk, he wasn't really hungry for breakfast til after 8am at least (earlier riser, so about 1.5-2 hours after the bottle).

Crumpets? english muffins, piklets ..., my 13 month old won't have a bottle at any time of the day. So I now get milk in with rice bubbles - 1st day didn't work so well - but now she gets excited with the popping/cracking noise, 1st few times I just made it a bit of a game.

Gabrielle doesn't do breakfast either. I always make her some toast and she will have a couple of bites before she has had enough and I put some of my porridge or ceral in a wee bowl for her but she will only have a few spoons.
I just make sure I always offer even if it's not eaten. She usually has 'breakfast' at about 7 and then morning tea at about 9 - and she eats and eats then. I figuire she just may not be an early morning eater as I know some of us aren't. Not me though
Oh although this morning at breakfast time I was making their lunch and Gabrielle swiped a sandwich and some popcorn so not exactly breakfast foods but something to try??

Tom has lost interest too but he hasnt had a morning bottle since I stopped BFing him at 7mo. He used to be great at breakfast but most days it sits there at the table and gets picked at throughout the morning. Toast is definitely more appealing than cereal at the moment. Smoothies are good though.
Try a "special" breakfast treat....it doesnt have to be naughty just not typical breakfast...like sandwiches instead of breakfast and make a big fuss. Have it on the floor on a mat or something. just make sure you are happy to give it to him again....as you may find it gets insisted upon.
at the moment I work on a daily food allowance and let him eat when he wants as long as he is eating enough throughout the day. I just cant be arsed with the fuss.

Do you guys eat breakfast too? maybe if you don't they think they don't need to either?? Just a thought.
I would probablyr drop the morning bottle too. Give him milk in a cup either with his breakfast or after he has had breakfast (ie no milk until you have finished your breakfast).
Hope something works for you, lots of options from all the mums here
