Topic: Too much Milk & still on bottles Posted: 15 November 2009 at 8:20pm |
From reading another thread I realised I should start trying harder to decrease their milk feeds and move to sipper cups.
BUT they don't want to budge, I've managed to decrease their milk feeds down to 100-120mls milk but 4 bottles a day and refuse a sippy cup point blank. They have plenty of water through a straw. They eat heaps but have a hissy fit after their meals until I give them their milk.
Anyone have any special techniques for ways to decrease milk intake? They have a baby yoghurt a day, should I increase this? I already offer them cheese.
Do you use a sippy cup or one of those non-spill actual cups with a rim?
Any suggestions welcome.

I can't give you any advice about dropping the amount of feeds - I can't remember how we reduced DS's down!
However until just a couple of months ago, he was still waking during the night and not resettling until he had a bottle. We managed to wean him off that be reducing the amount of milk, and also watering it right down. Eventually we got down to about 140mls which was half milk half water (gross). In the end he decided it wasn't worth waking for.
If you have already managed to reduce the amount, maybe you could start watering it down?
He still has his milk in a bottle before bed, both at night and on the days we put him down for a nap after lunch. If it is a no-nap day (becoming more frequent unfortunately), then I give it to him in a tumbler, sometimes with a straw. He is a bit older than your guys though so would have better coordination with a proper cup. Could you try a lidded straw cup?
I'm not going to push dropping the bottle just yet. He's got a new sister, and he will be moved from his cot in the next couple of months, so that's more than enough change for now.

Thanks potato, they drink their water from a lidded straw cup so maybe I just give them their milk in it - just don't want to confuse the whole milk/water cups but maybe it doesn't matter.
I already water down their milk - still using formula because it's cheaper than whole milk and every second feed do 1scoop for the 120mls water so they're not getting much nutrience from it anyway.
I wonder whether it's really that bad a thing to still have 500mls of milk & be on bottles but from what I read I suppose I should try to change it.

Meh - if it works for you guys then I honestly wouldn't worry about it.
As long as they are eating enough, ie three decent meals plus snacks, then I don't personally see the harm in 500mls of milk.

Since they're only having half bottles, the amount is actually about right (400-500mls is recommended). But if you want to cut the number down, I'd start with one of the day milk feeds (eg after breakie) by using distraction (rush them off to some exciting activity) or giving them another "treat" instead til they're used to not having it at that time.
I moved Jakes water to the sippy straws or pump type bottles and the milk to a sippy cup with the non-spill valve thing removed so it flowed fast (so they were in different cups) but it probably won't matter if you use the same type of cup. Or you could try a "big boys cup" and see how they go. Adding a little milo or complan to the milk may make it more appealing in the cup too.

If its any comfort Oli is still on 3 x 200ml bottles a day - I am trying to wean him off his lunchtime one, but he refuses to go for a nap without it.

Ohh SimSam that does make me feel better & thanks Nikki & potato for the ideas. I think I'll just keep the boys routine as is and change it when they're ready. They're healthy & happy so I'm happy.
