Topic: Normal or unlucky? Posted: 24 October 2009 at 7:56am |
DS is now down to one nap (of 40 minutes) a day, just after lunch. He goes to bed at about 6.45pm and has just started waking at 6am.
He's not even one yet! Is this normal? It's a tiring day for me.

Hows he coping with that little sleep?? If hes quite wound up through the day I'd say hes not getting enough sleep.
Me personally at that age - I would still be putting him down for 2 naps a day even if he didn't sleep at first. Jake goes through 'nap-issue' stages every so often but at that age I'd just put him down for each nap and let him cry. When he started waking up earlier than I was ready to get up (6am is DEFINITELY earlier than I'm prepared to get up!!) I'd just leave him. I'd put books and a sippy cup of water in his cot when I went to bed so he had something to do but yeah wasn't letting him call the shots lol I like my sleep too much.
Dunno if any of that helps but hope you get it sorted chickie.

I remember Tom going through a similar phase and I still INSISTED on 2 naps, even if one of them was reading his books by himself in his cots. He soon went back to 2 good naps. He is now on one 3 hour one and recently tried to drop that for a couple of weeks.....and went back to it.
I'd be suprised if he is coping with that little sleep.

yeah i think the same.. 45 mins isnt enough unless he really is coping well.. E was still on 2 naps then and went to 1 2-3 hour about 14 months.

I agree it's not enough sleep at that age... I would persist with attempting two sleeps... is there anything that might be stopping him sleeping as much - teething, sore ears, etc...?? My girl was still having 2 2 hour sleeps up until 14-15 months... she still has one 3 hour sleep at 21months... so 45mins doesn't sound like much! it's awful when they try change the sleeping routine eh

Golly thats a long day!
Issy was still having two sleeps till about three months ago, sometimes at her second sleep she would just "rest" but we always put her down for two.
Now she is down to one nap a day its a big one in the middle of the day (three hours), even now she sometimes has two naps.

He's fine, not at all feral with one nap. If I put him to bed in the morning he doesn't sleep. Chatters away for awhile then cries to be let out. That's why we've scaled it down to one nap.
I think the frustrating thing is that he gets by with that little sleep.
He's always been a minimal napper.

Catriona only sleeps for about 45 mins in the day at most
She sleeps at night from 7.30 to 6.30
I have no idea how she copes on so little sleep, but she is certainly happy enough and very active.
Sometimes when she is at daycare she wont go to sleep at all (which baffles them as much as me!)
I guess some just need a lot less than others . . .

My boy was the same, dropped back to one sleep at 11 months as well! But after a little while he started sleeping longer for that one sleep. I would just leave him and give him a chance to realise that he will feel better on more sleep. Luke probably spent a few weeks doing only an hour for that sleep, but now does 2hrs at least.

Caden went down to just one sleep at about 11 months, I still tied putting him down for 2 naps but he would just scream and cry so i gave up and he now has one nap at about 11 or 12 and he sleeps 2-3 hours sometimes longer.

I definitely insisted on a couple of daytime sleeps when DD was a toddler in fact I still try and get a sleep out of her now and she's 3yo. She often manages 60-90 mins but at the very least has a rest time.
SOS by Tizzie Hall suggests the following routine for a toddler:
7am: milk feed
8am: breakfast
10am: morning tea
10:15am: sleep (2 hours+)
12:30pm: lunch (but if baby's still asleep leave them and feed them lunch when they awake)
2:30pm: sleep (don't let your baby sleep past 4:15pm)
5pm: dinner
6pm: bath
6:40pm: milk feed
7pm: bedtime

Hayden only ever had 2 sleeps in a day right from newborn, plus a nap in the front pack or pram in the later afternoon if I could work my magic so I wasnt surprised that he went down to 1 sleep at 11mths, however 45mins doesnt seem like quite enough for either of you!!!
If you leave him for 15 / 20mins of low grade whinging he *might* nod off again. Sometimes Hayden will wake after his first sleep cycle and act all indignant like its time to get up but I just leave him in his cot and about 70% of the time he will go down for another hour / hour and half, obviously you know when your kidlet reaches the point of no return with the crying and sleep is a lost cause but its worth a try perhaps, even if you leave books in his bed so he can entertain himself for another half hour or so - the rest time is still good for him and you never know he might get bored and go back to sleep!!!

DS was down to one nap a day at 11 months, and our world got a lot better.
How active is he? Crawling, walking? Persevere and the nap may get longer again soon.
But yip, completely normal. While some mums are lucky enough to have 2x 2 hour naps, not all do, and while it would be nice sometimes it is much better to accept what you do have and just get on with it, rather than trying to mould to what a random author says is 'right'.
I guess I have real troubles wih Tizzie Hall, as she is great at saying what your baby 'should' be dong, but rubbis at telling you how to get to her ideal. Not to mention her ideal might be completey wrong for your family. I mean the sleep for 2hours+, how exactly are you supposed to manage that if your baby is wide awake and ready to go after 40 min. What are you suppsed to do for the rest of the 1 hour 20 +?

Spencer dropped to 1 nap just after 12 months but it was for longer than 40 mins.
I think if he is happy just go with it but if he starts to get feral or you just think he needs more then I would put him down even if he just rests rather than sleeping. Spencer doesn't always have a sleep these days but he always goes in his room for some quiet time at least.

We dropped to one nap about a month ago but even now I don't think it's enough.
We wer doing a nap 9.30 -10.30 the a nap after lunch at 1 - 3 but he started sleeping the mornig one then not in the afternon wich made the day really loong.
So now we do a sleep from 1- 4. But today i put him down at 11am, as the last few days he's been waking around 6am then getting to tired before lunch, and he's still asleep at just after 1pm.

I'm so pleased there are other mums who have the same 'awake' kids!
The one nap after lunch is working well (for DS) and if he's knackered he'll do 1.5 hours which is awesome for me - and unheard of.
