Topic: recurrent miscarriage clinic vs private?? Posted: 07 October 2009 at 12:13pm |
Hi
Just had our 3rd miscarriage and have an appointment to see our GP. Want to get the ball rolling on a referral to a specialist but was just wondering what peoples views were on Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic (at national womens) vs going private??
I've heard that the waiting list at the clinic can be quite long and if that's the case I'd much rather go private.

Karen I am so so sorry that you are going through this heartbreak again
I don't have any experience with specialists in Auckland (my sister did but that was a number of years ago so probably not relevant anymore) but I decided to go privately to my specialist. Apparently the RMC in Hamilton had at least a 6 month waiting list but I could get in to my spec within 3 weeks. If you can afford it then go for it I say! Mine costs about $130ish an appt. My gp did all the bloods and tests she could so I have only had to see the spec once (where he prescribed me progesterone pesseries to use) and I have made another appt to see him late November as I haven't conceived again (after 3 in 4 months lol)
All the best hun, 4th time lucky for both of us I think

Karen - sorry that it has come to this for you.
I didn't want to wait until i had 3mcs so asked my GP to refer me to a specialist, my GP also ran a whole lot of tests so that the specialist had them for my first appt.
The specialist i went to is actually the same one that works at greenlane so i didn't feel like i was missing out. I think my first appt was around the $300 mark and then they got cheaper. Luckily for me i only needed the one appt, they also offered me early pregnancy monitoring which i found good. They went so far to give me scans weekly from 7 to 11 weeks for reassurance at no extra cost.
If i were you, i would enquire about the waiting time, i think it may be near the 12month mark and then decide if you want to wait that long and if you can afford to go private.
If you want the name ect of my specialist let me know.
Laura

I am seeing Paul Robinson at Origins who specilises in recurrent miscarriage. There is no way I would want to wait around on the public system, he too is going to monitor me closely for my next pregnancy with early scans.
Good luck

thanks for yours words of support and advice.
I rang the RMC this morning to find out what the process was and how long the waiting list was. The lady I spoke to was very helpful and said based on current numbers they'd be able to see me around the 9th Dec. That gives me time to have all the blood tests done and them time to anlayse the results - apparently the test my husband has to have takes 1 month to come back, so i didn't think that was to bad.
Nothing like having a back up plan though,so Laura, if you could give me the details of your specialist that would be great.
thinking about the waiting list makes me sad though.... it's scary how many of us have to go through this.

Karen thats great that they could see you in december. The test that takes a month is probably the chromosome one, i think you both will have it done.
My specialist is: Karen Buckingham @ Repromed in Newmarket. You can google the clinic for the phone number etc. They also gove you a price schedule up front so that good.

HI Karen, just wanted to say I'm really sorry you lost another baby. It's great that you are taking steps to hopefully get answers that will give you a sticky bubba . After my second m/c I decided I wouldn't get pregnant again without checking that nothings wrong with me IFYKWIM (ok so alot of m/cs are nothing to do with us but wanted to rule out any issues). I'm in the Naki so no advice on who to see obviously, but I went private as I just didnt want to muck around with the time (me being 37 and DH 38). I had a follow up with the specialist today after my ultrasound. It seems that my body is possibly not following the correct steps when I get pregnant and my lining is very thin so thats perhaps why bubba isnt sticking. I am going to be trialling phenate (low dose) next cycle and getting another ultrasound to see whether this has helped. Have to wait another two cycles to try again but better to get it all sorted hopefully to get a baby that sticks.
Best wishes for the rest of your journey and hoping you get your precious bundle soon.

Hi, I can highly recommend Shore Birth - I have a specialist Ob there who specialises in high risk pregnancies and repeat miscarriages. We have just gone through our 2nd and the team were so amazing, Im due for tests in a couple of weeks to try and figure it all out - suspecting a link to the pulminary embolism I had in 2005......good luck to you for your next try - and in the meantime try the library for a book called "life after baby loss" Im reading it at present and it has been so helpful and inspiring.

I have only had one miscarriage and went to see Dr Richard Fisher up in Auckland at Fertility Specialists (Ascot Hospital). He is known as the best fertility specialist in NZ and I found him to be wonderful. I got in to see him two weeks after making my appt. One of my friends referred me to him and to be honest, I think it's worth going private over something like this. Also- they do offer funding, so look into that.

we've got our appt at the RPL clinic next week.
we've had all the blood tests and I've had enough ultrasounds to sink a ship but have no idea what to expect.
what did you guys go through at your first appointment?
