so am feeling just a wee bit concerned about Taine. some of you may remember some issues we had with him about three months ago. Basically he was always tired, pale and unhappy. we took him to the beach one day and he lay down and asked to go home -whereas a few weeks ago he had loved the beach and swimming.
Went to the doctor and had a blood test. He had poor iron levels. so we put him on supplements and mince galore. He perked up, was happy as. We were told to bring him back two/three months later for another test to rule out any underlying cause for the iron deficiency.
So we did. I wasn't concerned as he had been really happy, although a wee bit clingy (i put that down to the previous week he'd spent by himself with my parents). he hasn't been on supplements lately, due to the nurse saying that we wanted to see if his body could produce iron - or something along those lines - and that the supplments to be masking something else.
yesterday we had the blood tests done, and the doctor has just rung and said his levels are very low again - at 8 when the minimum they should be is 20. I'm freaking out jsut a wee bit. We are going back to the doctor (as her request) today - she wanted us to come in ASAP - which of course doesn't leave me feeling particulary good either. yuk yuk yuk

well, am back from the doctor. She's given me worming tablets (apparently worms can cause iron deficiency) nd iron supplements for three months. then we have a month off and then another blood test.
She was fantastic though. the lack of iron is pretty serious - his stores are basically out, however when i brought up and underlying cause she said
"if i had even an inkling that this was something more serious, i wouldn't muck around with waiting months, you would be in having tests"
Kidney and liver functions are fine, as is his white blood count, very relieving.
she also said that if his iron was STILL low, he may be on iron supplements for the foreseeable future, and they may also gtest for coeliacs. So reassured for now. but in love with DR MICHELLE JAGGA! What a great doc!

I was wondering about some food intolerance - if it is gluten, sing out if you need help with the mine field

Low iron can also relate to low vit c so it might be worth having a chewy vitamin c supplement (I loved them as a kid) as vitamin C helps iron be absorbed more readily. My brother was anaemic when he was a kid and he used to get blood noses all the time. He is fine now though!
