I was just flipping through that pregnancy cosmo last night and one of the things they said was to stay away from saunas and spa's while pg - i cant remember reading anything like this before and my midwife didnt say anything - and i am just wondering how damaging they are? The reason I ask is cos hubby and I went away for the weekend and on Sat night we sat in the spa at the hotel for like a hour, it was pretty hot but the air outside was quite cool but i imagine it would have elevated my body temp somewhat...i know it's done and i shouldn't worry about something that i cant change anway but I was just wondering if this is common knowlege and if anyone knows why it is bad, and I suppose I am wondering how bad it could have been for my little baby?

it is not reccomended because it can elevate your body temperature, as you mentioned and this can cause foetal distress. i had no idea about it in my first pregnancy either and only found out this time when a friend who had just had a spa put in, read it in the info booklet! i'd had ton's of hot baths and showers before i knew that.
i can't remember whether you said you'd felt baby move yet or not mrs frantic, but if she's still kicking away i don't think you've got anything to worry about.
if in doubt, ring your midwife hun, thats what i do... for every little thing! she could probly visit to check the heartbeat etc for you to put your mind at ease. let us know how you are

Hi Mrs Frantic,
I also went away for the weekend and my husband and I went to the hot pools. I was aware of body temperature changing and baby can get warmer so I stood up a few times to get some cool air. I wouldn't worry about it too much - as long as you don't have spas too regularly and make sure you get some cool air on your belly.

When we went away I got in the hotel spa for around 5/10 mins and just got out when I started to feel hot...bubs is kicking madly and all fine so if I was you I wouldn't panic. Give your midwife a call if you are concerned though.
