Topic: Hes biting me! Posted: 29 September 2008 at 6:56pm |
OK, I;m Tom;s favourite teething device at the moment. He is biting me almost any opportunity he gets. They used to be kisses or raspberries but now they are bites. They also used to start slobbery and then move into a bite, now they just nip straight away. He has only bit DH once (on the nipple and I couldnt help PMSL) Tom thought it was funny as we were both laughing but then DH told him he mustnt bite mummy and daddy and he started crying. I felt awful. He also bit me today when he walked from DH to me and I didnt want to tell him off too much as we are trying to really encourage the walking.
All I am doing at the moment is pulling him off and saying NO! Dont bite Mummy! But I have found myself giving him a little smack on the bottom out of reflex......which I dont know if I want to do. The first time I did that I ended up in tears....heck I dont think he;d have even felt it through his nappy but I felt awful.
Any ideas???

Stick him in time out. We did it with Spencer cos he was biting us and chewing on the coffee table. Took a few attempts but then he got the idea. He has now stopped biting and also listens to me at other times when I say no, as he now knows that no means no.

The smack does work, not as a hurt thing but as a fright thing, and was what I did at first too.
What I do these days (when I'm bf lol) is put them down on the floor for 60 seconds before re-offering feed or whatever they next need. This way, I hope, they learn to link biting with no food.

Daniel started biting but I'd just remove him from me, put him on the floor and say no very sternly and walk away. He only needed that a couple of times and got the message

I tried that with Spencer before the time out but he didn't care, would just happily go and play on his own, he use to laugh in my face when I said no as well

Oh No Nikki!! Coop is just the same at the moment. I think I'm getting some loving, smoochy kisses then out come the fangs!
He even bit my hand as I was holding his onto the swimming pool rail so I'd let go!

I have a bruise on my arm from Jett nipping me. He's scary! He just lunges in & bites so quickly! I think my scream scares him, but he hasn't stopped doing it. I tell him very sternly "NO Jett!" but he just stares at me and tries to do it again. I think he likes the reaction. Cheeky brat!

Possibly but Spencer was biting our coffee table for months before we did timeout and stopped it. Biting us though was a bit different it was more the over excited kisses but then he started thinking it was funny just to bite us (well I say us it was me 98% of the time) and not even bother with the kiss bit. He still does get over excited and bite now and again but not to the same degree and I haven't had to put him in timeout for a few weeks.
The other thing we did and still do is lots of teaching "gentle" cos he was also quite bad for pulling my hair and pinching my face and getting over excited and wacking the cat, but none of it seems intentional just more that he doesn't quite understand that it hurts. Seems to be working as now he gives me a kiss and then pats me, instead of biting me and ripping my hair out And he's got much better with the cat too and is nice and gentle with them. They still get the odd wack though.

Yeah, we have been doing "gentle" for a long time and Ithink he is getting it now. I think Tom is doing the over excited type of bite. oh yay!!!! He thankfully doesnt bite any of our furniture but has destroyed the side of his cot. I didnt realise he'd done it until I saw it in a different angle with the light. It is quite amazing to see how much he uses it for teething. He wont use any teething rings etc. I hope things might settle when these teeth FINALLY come through. We have been teething badly for nearly 6 weeks. I think about 5 teeth are trying to come through....you see them one day and then nothing! Arrrrrggghhhhh!!!! And now you feel guilty giving him Pamol...you cant win.

Daniel uses the cot for teething too, but ah well, if it helps he can do it. It's quite funny seeing all the teeth marks all over the sides

Gabrielles been biting and scratching too and she thinks it is hilarious when I tell her no, no matter how stern it is. DP only has to say 'oi' and she gets upset so must be the deep voice? Anyway I just tell her no and then ignore her for 30 secs or so which she hates and then I tell her that bitng/scratching is not allowed and show her how to play nicely and gently.
Well who knows if it will work but thats my wee method which I am sticking too... for now!

Tom seems to be getting it when I say "No biting!" or "dont bite" he pulls off before he's made contact.

I think it is a phase as DD went thru the same thing at Tom's age...as her first teeth came out at 13mnths. I use to say "NO Biting darling"..."Mummy is getting ouchy"...and then I would point at the red mark she left on what ever she bit (Mainly arms or fingers)....and kept telling her every time. Once I did smack her bottom because she did it so hard and cought me by surprise...and like you I felt horrible. But after a while she got it and stop bitting!
Just remove him from you and keep telling him that no bitting and make sure you dont smile (have a blank/unhappy face) ...as if he catches you smiling...he will think its a game and its a funny thing to do!
Good luck...it should pass!
