Topic: I was desperate Posted: 29 August 2008 at 8:51am |
For the last week and a half Kylah has been waking at stupid times in the night and staying up for hours, just wingeing. Not crying but she wants to be up. Last night through pure exhaustion i was desperate so took her for a drive, she fell asleep in 40min and i drove home, parked up and went to sleep in the car with her for an hour. I feel terrible, what if some lunatic came and seen us?!
Iv had her ears checked, she didnt have a temp but at 4am after 2.5 hours of being up i didnt know what else to do.
I got pulled over after leaving home with her and i was bawling my eyes out. poor cop. He looked new on the job too.
I dont know what im doing wrong.

Kandise you arn't doing anything wrong! It is probably just a stage (hopefully a very short one! Lachie went through something similar, he had been sick but he was fine again and was just really hard work and would wake and want to be up for 2-3 hours, sometimes grizzling other times happy as, it went off on and for about a week and I just tried to keep things as normal as poss, although i was in tears from exhaustion serveral times, I said to DH it was worse than having a newborn. Kylah is usually a great sleeper so she will settle down again. I will be thinking of you.

I agree with Jessica, you aren't doing anything wrong. You might have to try some tough love with her, and just leave her to it. She needs to learn that night time is for sleep time...it might take a few days, but I'm sure she'll get the message...

The others are right. It's nothing that you've caused and most likely just a stage. Putting her in the car and going for a drive to help her sleep was a great idea as long as you were alert.
There were plenty of times, when Michaela was younger that I did that when she wouldn't have an afternoon nap. I'd go for a drive and then once she was well and truly asleep I'd park in my driveway, lay the drivers seat back, cover us both with blankets and read a book or have a nap myself.

I agree with Mel. She needs to learn that night time is for sleeping. Maybe look at the number of sleeps she's having during the day - is she sleeping really well during the day? If yes maybe she's getting more than enough and needs to drop a daytime sleep.
Have you been in touch with the OB sleep expert (pretty sure we still have one) and also check out the sleep store website for articles and tips - Louise from the sleep store was fabulous when I was having trouble getting Michaela to self settle and sleep through the night.
Good luck, I hope you get a great nights sleep soon (can someone sub a day or even just an afternoon this weekend so you can have a rest?)

I had a few late night drives myself!! You are not doing any thing wrong! I remember feeling like a Zombie with DD as well and was totally exhausted with no sleep!
Its a phae hun I am sure she will get over it soon.
I also think she might be going thru a growth spur and have extra energy that needs to burn off....may be have really good activity session with her before her bath and bed....burn of the extra energy!
Good luck! I am sure it will be over soon! And you are not doing any thing wrong!

Thank you for your replies.
I cant let her CIO, as soon as you leave her to cry she will work herself up in 3 seconds flat to the point she wont breathe, power chuck and choke on it.
Its really scary. Even if you tell her off, like say NO when shes doing something she shouldnt, she will howl nd powerchuck and choke.
Im not sure what to do.
Shes having one sleep during the day and its normally to make up for what sleep she didnt get the night before. This has been going on for awhile now..

I wonder if you try the other method to CIO, controlled crying.
It is on the Sleep Store web site so you will get more detail off there.
We ended up doing the CIO as we were out of patience....maybe jump on there and check it out, might give you some tips?
Good luck, so many of us have been there and it is hard work, but there is some light, just have to get to it

I was going to suggest the sleep sense program, it's nota s hard going on you or Kylah as CIO. You stay in the room and stroke them initally and then withdraw over a week or so so that they learn to self settle. But they also know that mummy is there too. Ask Ann to email (Ilost my electronic copy) it makes pure sense when you read it through and try out the tips

Hugs Kandice, I feel your sleep deprived pain!
LOL about the cop tho, reminds me of the time I got pulled over when the gremlins were 9 weeks, they had just got out of hospital yet again and were in the middle of a 20-hour screaming fit. I got pulled over for speeding on the way home from picking Maya up from preschool and I just burst into tears, sobbing my heart out. I think the poor cop was wondering what he'd struck and how on earth he was going to get away from this mad crying woman! He didn't give me a ticket in the end, what a lovely man, and here was me "but I have to go to the supermarket waaaa waaaaa" and he was like, "forget the supermarket, go home and get some sleep!"
Sorry, threadjack!
Maya used to do the vomiting thing, I was told to go in and change her/the cot in the dark without making eye contact or talking to her and then starting the CIO process again. Worked well, altho even now she still vomits if she gets herself too worked up.

sarah was the same
i got told to do the same thing
no eye contact
just change her lie her back down
it worked well
you could try putting a few toys in the cot with her in the times she wants to be awake.
