Not sure if I've posted much about this before, but we've had longstanding issues with Joshie's daycare. Ever since moving from the baby room he has been completely miserable. He's been a hysterical mess every morning I drop him off, refuses to eat, cries most of the day, and then when I go to collect him he is usually standing by the gate looking out at all the cars and calling for mummy

Well, after many discussions with the centre, many action plans and many many discussions with DP, we removed him from the centre and have managed to secure him a place at one of the better centres in Auckland.

And, after a week of orientation, and two full days there on his own, I can with much happiness and relief report that he loves it there!!!!

He happily waves bye bye to me in the morning, plays with the other children, and when I go to collect him he wants to stay!!!

I am a very happy mummy

He's out with Grandma for the day    And she just took him out to the Airport to see the Olympic team come home!

He's only going to daycare now for three days a week. Grandma is taking him on Wednesdays, and I don't work on Thursdays. But I'm off today as well so I'm at home getting all my chores and baking etc done.

wow...thats good! Why do you think he hated his last daycare??

DD still cries some days when her fav teacher is not there, but I phone during the day and she is happy enough and when DH picks her up she is in a happy mood! Z also hated the toddlers room and wanted to go back to nursery in the beginning!

But good on you for finding a new place for Josh....It would kill me if Z looked out to the cars and cried for me!!

I think the main issue was there were so many kids in the room (40) and so few teachers (4) that he felt overwhelmed, and really didn't receive any attention at all. Also, there was little structure, and just a not good feeling about the place, you know what I mean?

It totally broke my heart every day when I would arrive and there would be a tearstained wee face waiting at the gate.....

...oh poor little man!

40 kids and 4 teachers...is that even allowed?

I think Z's class has 15 kids all together but hardly on the same day...and 3 teachers at all times so while one is on lunch another one replaces!!

I think you did the right thing to move him....he sounds like he is enjoying himself now!!

Is that the daycare on Jordan Ave? I've heard recently that it's not the greatest. Have you got him into another one in our area or are you having to travel further?

So glad to hear that he's happier now though! Yay Joshie

Yep, thats the one Mel. Interesting to hear other people have problems with it too.....

Unfortunately 40 kids and 4 teachers is apparently the Ministry of Educations standard (1 to 10 ratio) for that age group. Terrible huh!

His new place is in Three Kings. There are 12 kiddies in his room, 3 full time teachers and always students and work experience people as well. So ends up some days being a 1 to 2 ratio!

That's good to hear. Kahtrell loves daycare, but is back to the stage where he gets a little sad when I leave. I do wonder how he will go when he's moved to over 2s, but I'm sure that'll be a long long way a way because places over there don't turn up frequently so he'll probably be 2 1/2 before going over. It's good though because for the first few weeks they have the kids in the under two class for a little bit and then take them over the other class, so they get use to the new class, but still have the comfort of a familiar teacher with them during that transition period.

Oh our Day care has a policy of 1:5 and max of 20 if three teachers are in a class. And we love our daycare....$200 week for nappy (not that Z uses them anymore, she is in undies!) and food (B/fast, M/Tea, Lunch, A/Tea and snack) and they teachers are lovely!! Not bad I say!

OMG that is shocking, most daycares I have been in have never allowed themselves to go to that ratio. I am lost for words, as I thought it was for over 3 year olds that you could have that ratio.

Yay you got into another daycare and he is much happier there as well.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Wow so cool that your wee man is much happier at a new daycare that must be such a relief to you.

Must have been really heartbreaking seeing him like he was before.

It has happened to me before while leaving my DD at kindy she dint want me to leave and I ended up going to DH work and crying.
