Topic: TT Question Posted: 12 July 2008 at 8:58pm |
Elle has started to get upset when she does wees. She freezes and says "scratchy" mummy and walks funny for a few secs until the wet feeling is gone. It's not actually scratchy, it's just her latest word.
Does this mean I should start TT now? I was planning to wait until Dec when it is warmer....

You can start anytime you like, but for now it's good to reinforce words like "yes, you are doing wees" etc and changing her as soon as she mentions it so that she gets used to being dry.

Thanks Busymum, i'll try. I do that now but she gets mad and runs away when I suggest changing her to a clean nappy.

Fiona, it sure does sound like she's ready to toilet train but as Theresa said you can toilet train anytime from now so if you'd prefer to wait until December that's fine. Just praise her for recognizing that she's been wees and change her as soon as she lets you. Also ask her if she wants to sit on the potty or toilet before her bath to familiarise her with using the toilet/potty.
We're TTing at the moment and doing it during winter works too if you want to start now..

She cries when she goes so I did wonder about a bladder infection but there is no smell, no fever and she's just finished some anti-biotics for her ears.
I guess it could just be that she doesn't like the sensation...?

Oh I should add that she only get's upset when her nappy is quite full, or is loose (i.e. when MIL has put it on!) so that is why I think it is the sensation of wettness that bothers her. I've talked about the toilet lots but when I ask her if she'd like to try it she gets mad.

Have you checked to ensure she doesn't have thrush from the antibiotics?

Yeap - doc checked that too yesterday when he was rechecking her ears. All clear.
She always scratches her butt cheeks like mad when her nappy is off but she has been cleared of everything so it must just be the air on it.

Scratching bum cheeks might actually be worms? I will deworm. McKayla did this as well and as soon as I dewormed she didnt scratch anymore. Might be that?

Fiona...
I'm doing "TT prep" (my own term lol) with Zamara because I too was hoping to wait until it's a bit warmer....
We've been ditching nappies with stay-dry layers in preference for natural fibres (when we're home that is, not overnight or out n about as she rashes easily) to try to encourage the difference between wet and dry. She already reports poos and wants the nappy changed with poos, so it's at least a step in the right direction.
The other thing we're doing is LOTS of positive on-potty (or toilet) time. She very rarely does anything, we're just getting her used to the sensation / idea - she likes to copy us so always has a book when she's on the potty To be honest I think it's only a matter of time, she already asks to go on the potty when she has her nappy off (tho still to actually *do* anything there)
