Topic: My child is immune to Phenergan Posted: 22 March 2008 at 12:31pm |
Just a rant really. As Elle is so loud at night, DH and I can't sleep while she is awake so the doc told us to give her Phenergan when she first wakes (around midnight). Apparently the normal 3 mLs most 18mth olds have is for an allergy dose so she said to give 7.5mLs for a sedative effect. Well, it does nothing...does make her sleep, nor does it make her more wakeful....it does NOTHING.
For months we ignored the noise and rocking and it happened about 4 or 5 nights a week. Now that we've gone in the with Phenergan, she NEVER sleeps through...still doesn't ever cry, just always wakes for at least 2 hours.
GAH! Bring on the specialist next week! DH and I are so tired we can barely function!
DOH! Now she is refusing to nap so better run

Aww that sucks.
When Jack was vomiting for a week we got given some and it did nothing for his sleeping either. MIL (a nurse) said it would only work a max of 3 days anyway.

That stuff did nothing for me as a baby, infact it did the opposite , mum only gave it to me that one time.

does she respond to a bath etc at night?
also a little out there but maybe she needs more day time stimulation than you are providing for her? can she go somewhere that she is going to wear herself out...even if you do a temp day care trial for a week and see if that works..i think from memory she is with a grandparent and you??? maybe she needs the stimulation etc....??? just an idea - if you cant do the daycarre how about taking her swimming and to the park etc at night before dinner and letting her run ragged, eat then bath and then sleep (hopefully)
Im anti drugging kids like that to be honest...id much raather wear ella out...and we only resort to pamol when she is mega sick or teething badly for a night...

LOL Bombshell. No, she doesn't need more stimulation. We spend a lot of time doing various things....lots and lots of running at the park, climbing, etc. She gets absolutely exhuasted! She goes to sleep like a dream...not a word of complaint.
Mentally we do a lot of activities and games and her vocab is enormous now...generally 3 new words a day!
We do a lot of activities with other kids, generally older kids so she gets loads of stimulation that way.
I don't use drugs either but my doc suggested it to try and break her habitual waking. We rarely use pamol or anything.

LOL it could be worse - we gave Maya Phenargan on a flight from Syd to Bangkok and she had the OPPOSITE reaction and spent the entire time bouncing off the walls of the plane. Stress city! She had it again when she had her 4yr MMR shot as a preventative against allergic reaction and it didn't make her sleepy then either, altho she wasn't quite as hyper as she had been the first time I gave it to her.
It worked a dream for the gremlins tho, Sienna's only had it once when she had a bad cold and couldn't settle and Mercedes had it a few times when her ears were bad while we were waiting for her grommet surgery.
Re: the stimulation thing - it's a fine balance, if you overstimulate a child they won't sleep well either, and understimulated children can be the opposite and sleep really well because they become lethargic and bored and sleep is a way of filling in time.

Nyah is allergic to it! She comes out in a horrendous rash. There is another product that you can get, but I can't remember the name?

It's ok. We'll just keep trying to get used to the earplugs and hope the doc can help us on Thurs. She wakes at exactly the same time each night now so it is clearly habitual.

Yep, it can make kids the opposite.. I think it actually says tha ton the box... but then it also says on the box that it's not safe for children under the age of 2 yrs old as there haven't been enough tests done to prove it's not harmful.

Mum2paris our doc said it is fine under prescription and we were only using it for up to 3 nights. Elle's waking is habitual and 3 nights of phenergan has been known to help in similar situations. However, after 1 night it's clear it doesn't work so we won't continue.

ooops, Didn't mean that to sound like a put-down fiona, hope it didn't. I just found it interesting that it says that on the box.. which i only found because we were prescribed it for Paris when she had a reaction to her 15mth jabs, it made her crazy, she would be asleep but thrashing around in bed and fell out sooo often, but she kinda needed it for her reaction. It is still actually in our cupboard needing to be biffed and has never been used since. Ayja goes doolally from anything with additives/colouring so theres no way i'd risk giving her that unless she had a reaction.. even Pamol mades her nuts.

I used this for Lesieli when she was a baby Fiona and it never worked for her either. She was on it for a few months as the paed wanting me to give it a good go and she was under 1yr. Paed was going to give her other heavier meds to help her sleep but I decided against it. I was resigned to the fact me little girl didnt need much sleep at all. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, she finally started sleeping thru the night when she was 5yrs old.

I had major issues with Jake, tried sedation (didn't work) had an expert help, I tried EVERYTHING. Most nights I was getting aobut 4 broken hours. He has only in the last 2 months or so been sleeping well, and its great. There is a light, soemtimes it takes ages to get there, but it will happen!! Hugs to you, it sucks and I can totally sympathise.
My 1 year old is showing signs of being the same, I am up to her at lest 2 if not 3 times a night... thats a whole other story.
Apparently it is waaaay more common than you might think. No one speaks up first though, cos of the "pressure" to have a "good sleeper"
Good luck!

Well it seems to be getting worse.
One of the wonderful things about elle is that she has always settled at bedtime without a word of complaint...just straight to sleep.
Last night however, she went down at 7.30 and at 9.30 was still playing and talking....and at 11 was still going. She eventually fell asleep just after 11 and then was awake again from 1 to 3. Again, totally happy, just rocking, making repetitive noises (my Mum says they are the same noises Autistic kids make in class...thanks mum!) and talking.
Maybe it's a type of hyperactivity? She needs so much to do / large spaces to run in during the day and then moves for half the night too.

i think you are heading towards needing to know whether or not she is autistic or your mind wont rest at all. also will help in case new baby shows same signs. Dont mean to worry you but i just finished reading an article where all 4 or 5 kids in one family had varying dgrees of autism - quite interesting and i can post it to you if you like? or source it - it was in WHO mag about two weeks ago and has b and w cover of Miss spears on it.
I think until you have a diagnosis or a clear cut =she is NOT atistic then you are going to worry and that is something you dont need now - or at all!

I really don't think she is autistic. If I was forced to "label" I would say ADHD...always on the go and needing a high level of stimulation. The docs always said her behaviours etc did sound like early signs of ADHD. IF that is the case, thankfully she is a girl so it will be less severe and hopefully very very managable.
